What snap caps (dummy rounds) do you use?
« on: February 09, 2006, 01:01:05 PM »
I own a CZ75BD Police, just received last week to replace my old Baretta 9mm.  When I take delivery of a new firearm, I usually spend that evening sitting in front of the TV in my den (after everyone's gone to bed) playing with it to get my hands and brain familiar with the feel and operation--I find it invaluable before I visit the range.

Admitely, it's difficult to avoid visiting the range straight away to put a few slugs through some paper first, but I've always felt more comfortable at the range following a "get to know each other" evening with my new baby.

Long story short, I've been using A-Zoom ammo snap caps (dummy rounds) 9mm Luger for my CZ, but I'm not that happy with them.  The CNC-machined ribbing makes then feel like I'm scratching the devil out of my clips when loading them up.

What do you use?

I use A-Zoom.

I just drop one in the chamber rather than load up a magazine, so I never worried about their effect on my magazine's lips.  But then I've never felt a need to work the slide in between shots while dry firing.

That's just me though.

I'll agree about the A-ZOOMs.  They are the best I've seen.

But... don't drop the snapcap into the chamber.  That's a NO-NO!

The ejector still has to jump the rim, and its not designed to do that.

Always load ANY round (live or snap-cap) from the magazine.

Doing otherwise will accelerate wear on the extractor and could lead to a break.

I used to use the red plastic ones with a brass base on them but after getting some a-zooms for my .45 I will be getting them for every caliber for now on. On my brass ones the primer area seems to get trashed real easy and they do not survive drops very well. A-Zooms are the way to go in my opinion.

Another vote for the A-Zooms. I used to use the red plastic caps with the brass base & primer, and they do wear out fast. The A-Zooms (I have them in 9mm and .380ACP) are a lot more durable.

If you are only concerned about protecting the firing pin during repeated dry firing, then a rubber O-ring in the hammer well at the rear of the slide should more than suffice:

However, if you are practising drills that require rounds to be cycled through the gun, then snap caps would still be your best bet.

What a Superb Tip.   It works fantastic.  Could put the snap cap people out of business (for those of us just dry firing away and not cycling actions) :)
