I got this pistol used and it looked like new though so I picked it up. Is this slide messed up routed and cracked. Should this be a concerne?

Looks chipped to me.  But that's not really a high-stress area.  I can't imagine why it broke, unless somebody did it with tools.  (I suspect it really just a "cosmetic" problem... but that's me GUESSING.

You might ask Jim Miossi to look at the photo.

Call Sig, give them the serial #, get an E mail address and send them the pics. If it's a problem, they'll make it right.

As Walt says, it's a low stress area, so I wouldn't worry too much. Is there any other damage, on the guide rod for instance, that may hold a clue as to the cause?

it was done with a tool for sure. The notch is not realy what caught my eye as much as the line coming from it did. Do you see the line? I was wondering if it was a crack or scratch. I can not think of what would cause a crack if that was not a high stress area.

Widge,

There is no damage any where else on the pistol. I will call and email Sig for sure but I just did not think they would be interested in a used pistol that I did not get new.

Bummer I just found out that the Sig customer service is not accepting e-mail so I will have to try to call tomorrow. One of the curses of being a swingshifter. LOL

Call them early, speak to a CS rep and ask if a gunsmith can take a look at your pics. I'm sure they'll make it right if it's a problem.

Update: the notch in the slide is supposed to be there to facilitate the barrel tipping down during the lock up cycle. The scratch is probably from the recoil guide or spring and nothing to worry about either.

Thanks Widge. Just so every body knows I did not start this thread to try to bash Sig or any thing I was just curious if it was supposed to be that way.

I don't know how SIG deals with guns that weren't bought NEW from SIG.  Not every gunmaker is as generous as Kel-Tec or Ruger.

Let's hope that its a cosmetic flaw and you don't have to worry about replacement, etc.

A good way to test if it's a scratch or a mark is to scrub it with a Q tip or swab and some solvent or gun oil. If it comes off or fades, it's a mark, if you end up with little cotton fibers sticking to it, it's a crack.

Walt: generally speaking, if it's a flaw in manufacturing such as a cracked slide, or frame, or broken takedown levers and the like, Sig are pretty good about making things right, no matter if the pistol is used. I've had some good experiences with them with things like roll pins, springs and so on.

KP, see my post 4 above yours with the update. It's nothing to worry about.

Thanks for all the replies. I am glad it is a normal thing because I really like the pistol and it has a lot of potential. When I shoot it more I think I will get better with it but so far I just have not shot it that great. Also I just did Widges test to see if it was a crack or a scratch and it showed it was a scratch then I turned my dremel way down and used a rubber abrasive tip to polish it up and the line went away completely. So it looks like I was just a but paranoid. I was more worried about its value than it coming apart or blowing up.
