I got out last weekend to shoot with my wife and daughter and we took out my wifes new (to her) S&W 64.  It is a SS 38 Special with a 1-7/8" barrel.  We bought hogue monogrips to help temper the recoil for my wife and we both loved it.  I thought that the sights were awesome, some of the easiest to acquire on any handgun I've shot.  At 20 yards I could easily hit pop cans with 90% of my shots.
It functioned flawlessly, of course.  We were shooting S&B 158 gr FMJ's.  They were on sale at Cabelas for $7.99/50.
My wife loved it, as well.  She shot almost as well, but commented on the stiff recoil.  Her father had brought along his old Iver and Johnson 44mag with some stiff 230 gr JHP and we convinced her to shoot one of those.  Afterward she commented on how nice the 38 Special recoil was.:)
I any case, we were both happy with the little smitty that she picked out.  I would definitely buy another.  Hopefully something with a 4" barrel, SS in 357 mag/max.

Question, does anybody chamber for the 357 Max?

I think only Ruger made a 357 Max, which is way out of print now, and ammo impossible to find. 110gr Fed HydraShok non plus + should work quite well in that 64! That's what I carried in mine.
   Great revolver, good choice.
If you need the 357, get the 65, and stoke it with 38+P.

If you go looking for a 65, you will have to settle for a used one or maybe one left over from last production, as S&W has discontinued all K Frame .357 Magnums and replaced them with L-Frame variants.

Glad you and your Wife are happy with your S&W 64.  The next step up now might be a 9mm Semi-Auto, particularly if you want to get into the Competition Games you have previously mentioned.

For all of those killed by a 9mm: "Get up! You are not dead! You were shot with a useless cartridge!"

That is already taken care of.  I picked up a CZ75BD last year and a Beretta 92 compact.  I also just bought a CZ75B for my wife because she liked my BD so much.  But another one would never hurt.
