They make top-quality slides and frames, some for 1911-style guns, some done with what appears to damascene metal work.  A truly topline Caspian slide and frame is a thing of beauty.

(They also make more conventional slides and frames.  I think they were a supplier for the SIG GSR, at least at first.)

So, are they like a 'build your own gun from scratch' type thing or do they take your production gun and work it over?

Caspian is a Parts Supplier to the Major Custom 1911smiths and individuals. They do not rework production firearms of other manufacturers.  Complete 1911's are available from their approved Gunsmiths. Most hobbyists tend to buy at least the Slide and Frame from them, and possibly the barrel, which WILL require custom fitting.

They used to do Glock stuff as well. I don't know if they still do, though...:\
