I really prefer to shoot outside and set up my own little targets.  Luckily, my wife's family has about a 3000 acre piece of dirt on Bear Lake's shore in Utah.  Over the years I have set up concrete pads at various positions and ranges.  The terrain is both flat and mountainous, so real world shooting (hunting) is easily simulated and I never have to worry about the other guy.
On indoor ranges, this year is the first year I shot in one (Doug's shoot'n'sports, SLC, UT) and the ease of shooting was great, just different.

I will try to post some pics of the 3000 acre shooting range.

That would be great to see.  You bring up a good point.  I have struck a balance between outdoor informal shooting and well regulated indoor and structured competition shooting.  I enjoy both.  I find that the structured shooting helps me shoot better recreationally on a casual basis.  One builds a foundation for the other.  Its a great thing when you think about it.

The indoor range just highly irked me, so this is the little outdoor range we go to. Nice, quiet, 100 yard range, nothing special, $4 to shoot all day, no running water, pit toilets, and we love it. Never full, never busy, nice people shoot here...

A very nice facility you have there.  Kinda looks like Area 51 from the air. LOL
Its good to have choices, but heck, some folks live in states where they can't shoot at all.  I have access to several police ranges, plus an oudoor NRA facility,  We should never take that for granted.
There was a time when rifle shooting was taken up by every red blooded American boy and ranges were in every town.  Now its a sad state of affairs.  , with the Boy Scouts and other youth groups being attacked for promoting firearms safety and outdoor responsibility.
