blackened stainless steel
« on: August 06, 2005, 05:33:16 PM »
I would like to have the stainless steel slide on my H&K compact blackened, not COATED , but similar to what SIG does on their pistol slides. Can anyone recommend a company that does this process?  Again, Iam not wanting NP3 , polycoat, duracoat, tuffcoat, blueing,parkerizing.....etc. BUT a chemical process that turnes the silver to black.

            thanks, pistolaro

SIG doesn't turn silver to black.  It COATS the silver with a black finish.  So its really little different the the finishes you don't want...

The problem with the "blackening" treatment is that you end up with a finish that can still be damaged, and any of the low-care advantage gained from having a stainless steel gun is generally lost.  (Its less prone to rust, but it'll still rust.)

SIG slides begin to show wear relatively quickly...  (Been there, done that.)

Is this similar to what Glock does in the way of a nitrous acid bath?

Can you anodize stainless? That would be an option if you wanted something not like a poly coat. I am not sure about the wear factor though.
