Latest SP-01 Project....
« on: March 09, 2018, 08:52:25 PM »
Converted to SAO with Cajun parts, 'target' trigger from Armory Craft but I think I'm going to put in the 'tactical' model.  Grips are Cool Hand 'Snakeskin' pattern.  Normally don't go with grips this thin on an SP-01 frame (although they are a bit thicker than aluminums), but somehow I like the feel of SAO models being narrow like a 1911.  Was able to install an extended left-side safety but kept the stock right-side after some fitting.  Dawson sights.

Reason why I put this together is for a dedicated optics platform, so I'm going to be attaching a CZC side-mount for a red dot. , Probably going to go with my Vortex Venom for now.

Will update after I get the installation.

Cool project, why the side mount instead of milling? The Vortex Vernon is a good choice.

I tried a pistol with a side-mount optic that didn't move with the slide reciprocating and I liked it much better than mounted on a slide.  Also it moves the optic forward which is closer to my natural focus plane.  Makes the dot a bit crisper.

It's interesting, it feels like a more svelte Tac Sport...like something you can 'take corners with', whereas the Tac Sport in comparison feels like a top fuel drag racer.

The slide is a TS Slide I got on etc classifieds here, and it has been milled to work on a CZ 75/SP01 frame....and it surprisingly works on the Shadow 2 as well.  Big thing is I have both a .40 and 9mm barrel for it, so my TS Blue, my Shadow 2, and this thing can all shoot .40 for Limited Major (would need .40 mags for the TS).

Does the Slide Mount setup still allow use of the iron sights underneath without removing the optic?

No, it is very low.  But I use the pistol without the optic mount too.

I presume that you can't the slide off with the rear sight on the slide?

Correct, so I just unscrew the optics plate from the frame.  I'm very careful and slow so I hopefully don't strip the threads, and then replace the loctite after a while when necessary.  Reason is that the TS slide that I have on here that I bought off a CZF member has both 9mm and .40 barrels, and since it is milled to work on a CZ75/SP-01 frame, I can use it on this frame, my Shadow 2 frame, and my TS Blue frame if I ever want to shoot .40/major power with them.

If I was only going to leave this gun yeti way it is, I'd probably replace the rear sight with a slide-rack lever that could clear the optics mount when removing the slide.
