The way the constitution is written no one should have any right suspended or revoked. If a person commits a crime and serves their time/pays their fine and any restitution involved they should have the chance to enter back in to society with the same rights and opportunities as any one else.
This notion of banning guns from criminals has been an abject failure. Hardened criminals ALWAYS find ways to get weapons to carry out their crimes. The law stops none of those types and only imposes restrictions on the law abiding.
I agree 100%. Pay your debt to society and receive full restitution of rights. Violent offenders should get 2A rights after a rigid review, but nonviolent offenders should get them back automatically upon successful completion of all requirements.
Paying your dues may not mean as much these days, given credit-time while in prison and time cuts for programs. Certainly prisons aren't what they used to be.
I see plenty of repeat offenders in my line of work, many of whom have multiple violent offenses. I can think of many who should NEVER legally have access to a firearm in this life (and should never get out of prison, but the Legislature and courts have ensured that they'll be out again, and reoffending).
Interesting also to look at the list of common law felonies in place at the time of the writing of the Bill of Rights. At least one is not even a crime any more (AFAIK).
