New to me P120
« on: June 02, 2018, 04:58:33 PM »
I joined the clone club this week. Went to a couple of pawn shops on Memorial Day. Was planning to try and make a deal on a C100 I knew one had. Showed up and no pistols were displayed at all. Employees more interested in talking to each other than helping me. Decided to hit the next one on my list. Found a P120. Looked to have maybe a box of ammo through it - very little wear when field stripped. Worked a deal, brought it home & cleaned it up.

Got to the range on Wednesday. Worked like a champ. The CZ 75b mags I have fed fine & slide locked back every time. Hollow points and FMJs all worked great.

Not certain if this one will stay range toy / HD & eventually get some minor tuning or full out upgrade & have a bunch of fun with it.
I am looking at replacing the grips and considering the 3 spring kit from CGW as DA is bad. SA is great however.

Really glad the C100 wasn't in the case. Though it may get a chance if still there when I get my fund built back up.

I modded the one I had a few years ago. I had a CZ75 extended firing pin turned down to fit, reduced firing pin spring, CGW Firing pin retaining pin, CGW Type 2 Disco, 11.5# hammer spring, and a 11# recoil spring, and did a full action job. It was comparable to some of my fully modded SP01's but had less muzzle lift due to the extra weight.

Last year I wanted to get a CZ without paying the high price tag, as I suspected I wouldn't be that excited about the CZ platform like everyone else was. So I went to Bud's in Lexington, KY and got a P120. I had decided to give a try to the Canik/Tristar P120 instead, to feel the water.
That P120 became my real first love of any guns. I was so impressed with all the gun's characteristics that I even decided to create a YT channel to talk about it.

Then, a few month latter I realized that I needed to try the real deal, a CZ SP-01. This one became my mistress  O0. The one you really have fun with, and do all kind of crazy things with. But every night, I come back to my P120, she is always waiting for me right by my bed.
Over all, I find the P120 a fantastic gun with a simplified design compare to the SP-01, but the CZ has a better finish and a lot more aftermarket parts, even so, many CZ parts will fit the Canik, some with slight modifications.
You made a good choice there rclee.

I have some like new VZ Grips that I took off a 75b when I sold it.  Been thinking about a P120 to put them on.   Silly that one would consider buying a firearm for a pair of grips rather than the other way around.

It make sense to me, those VZ grips needs a good caring home, and the P120 / VZ grips would be a perfect match  ;)
But they will require a little bit of sanding.

Here is one of the videos I used to help me match my grips the the Canik's frame.

I have a CZ 75b stainless. I shot it great in a local fun steel shoot. Much better than my (now wife's) XD Mod2. I could not bring myself to do any tinkering with it. That's what started me looking. I was planning an SP-01 until a guy at work mentioned the P120. And at the price point I'm in for it, I can mod it and still not be over the top.

@PS - I've seen some of your YouTubes and plan on watching some more.

Yep, I have that dessert sand cerakote T120 with green VZ agressive grips.  The brown VZ grenade grips came off a CZ 75B .40 cal that I parted with and the new owner wanted the original black plastic grips only.  So the grenade pattern VZ grips went back into the blister pack waiting for a new home.

P120 or S120.   Some all all steel this time around.

Congrats on the purchase OP.  I've had my P120 for over 4 years now, always been a great shooter.  I've had good luck with the ebay made in thailand grips with mine.  I liked the P120 so much a couple years later I got it's little brother the P100 and of course had to try to replicate the look with another set of Ebay grips.  Sorry for the poor quality pic of the P100, cell phone pic vs a real camera pic of the 120.

Hi Practical Shooter,

I watched your video "CZ 75 SP-01 vs Canik P120 - Physical / Mechanical review" (among others) dealing with the differences between the two models. Around 3'22" after the start of the video, you talk about the differences in the length of the top grip return. You use an English term for this part, but I don't understand it well, would you be kind enough to spell it, and, if possible, give me its French equivalent.

Kind regards

Emilio

I can't find Tristar spring kits on CGW website anymore and got no response to an email I sent them inquiring. Haven't located any other source yet. Need the spring kit and floating firing pin for a P100. Guess I shoulda bought multiples when they were available.  :-[

Have you contacted CZ Custom? They might have something that is not on the website. Back in the day they did some excellent custom work on them just to try it out. They only thing I know 100% swaps out is the hammer spring. Been running CZ 75 13#s on my L120 for years.
