CZ97 vs 1911
« on: June 16, 2018, 03:48:26 PM »
Does anyone here prefer the CZ97 over the 1911 for precision shooting such as in a bowling pin competition? I've tried both and still trying to make up my mind.

I don't compete but I'll take the accuracy of my 97BD over my 1911's any day. I find the 97 to be the softest shooting .45 acp in captivity.

I don?t compete either, but concur on recoil. One reason I don?t have a 1911 anymore. Not saying I won?t ever have another, just going to be hard to beat the 97.

For me the stock 97 vs my comparable 1911 in price, prob 1911
The 97 with E-conversion, better than any 1911 I?ve owned (WC, NHC, EB, DW etc)

I have shot 1911s, but never owned one. I don't have the sentimental feeling for them like many do. Many shooters in the our bullseye club have switched from their high priced custom 1911s to CZs after i've started shooting with them. I shot CZ75 SP-01 and CZ97B for center-fire portion of the match. Both CZs and 1911s can be shot accurately and it comes down to ergonomics and price. CZ97 can be accurized to match or beat the best custom 1911 for less then a half of the total investment and to me has better ergonomics.

What is the E conversion?

Cajun Gan Works' name for their way to upgrade the standard CZ97B. It includes improved trigger/action parts, internal polishing and 1911 style bushing.

I sure enjoy my un-modded 97 B. These guns definitely blot up recoil. The trigger is well broken in with a smooth pull to a 3.7 pound break.I do like the ergonomics and somewhat lighter weight of a 1911. I considered having an E conversion and better sights done on mine, and may yet do it. I would then have $1500-ish tied up in the 97. A very nice, new 1911 can be had for that money, though. Don't care for the recoil of a 1911 in 45 cal? Try what I did and get a 1911 in 38 Super. Mild recoil and a nice supersonic bark in a highly accurate pistol that needs no expensive "mods".

Thanks all. Just what I was looking for. Shot my two best 1911's this past Saturday in a bowling pin competition at my local club. Three good stages and two poor. Not good. Have had the e conversion done which is great. Has the night sights that came on the gun. Not crazy about the sights. May eventually replace those. Will go with the 97 next time. Again, thanks for the responses.

Good advice here. Recently received a CGW E conversion and it shoots much nicer than a bullseye 1911 I have. The 38 Super is a great shooter too; both are excellent platforms.

I shoot my new 97bd almost as good as I shoot my 20 yr old Colt custom shop 1911.   Where the CZ shines is much faster follow up shots. The CZ has had a few small CGW parts and springs and will soon have the E conversion. After the E conversion my Colt may become a safe queen.

I carries a series 70 Colt 1911 for 20 years, fine gun.  Dropped it like a hot rock after shooting the 97b.  It's my .45 gun of choice over the 1911 and Glock 21.  I like and will keep the Colt and Glock, but the 97 is so much sweeter.

Update: I installed a Burris Fast Fire 3 on the 97B/E and it's an even better shooter now. I would use it in preference to a 1911 if I was doing competition shooting. A lot has to do with how it fits in your hand/grip.
