Question about Glock 19 Gen 5
« on: June 27, 2018, 05:59:53 PM »
I miss my old Glock 19 Gen 3 and am thinking about replacing it with a Gen 5. My only concern is the ambidextrous slide release which is not really appealing to me. Looking for any input about the Gen 5. Thanks! Jokes and rational discouragement welcome too.  O0

The ambi slide catch is there if you need it, but unobtrusive if you don?t. I?ve read of guys just cutting off the right side catch because it interfered with their grip, but honestly can?t imagine how they even hold the gun for it to be an issue for a right handed person. They must really use a lot of finger on the trigger I guess which would rotate their hand inwards I guess?

Thanks. It doesn't really look like an issue.

Have heard of complaints on the G19 grip because of the cut out on the front strap interfering with the pinky.  Not everyone has that complaint but some find it to be an issue.

eastman, not nice...even if truthful.  ;D
All joking aside I have had people who tried the Gen 5 who went back to Gen 4 or 3, not liking the grip, but I am not a Glock guy, so I could tell you.

That was my experience when test driving Glock 19s. The Gen 4 just worked better for my hands. My wife preferred the Gen 5, her hands are much smaller and she has very slim fingers. The other thing I quickly learned was trigger kits are readily available for Gen 3 and 4 pistols, but somewhat uncommon for Gen 5.

Buy the GEN 4 if the ambi relase isn't your thing. Ive shot both a lot, I dont notice enough of a difference for me to buy the GEN 5 if i wanted another glock, currently I'd go GEN4 if I did buy another Glock.

We had a lot of hardcore Glock guys not pick up the Gen 5 for various reasons. Not liking the cut out in front, ambi release(you arent the first person to say that) to expensive, etc etc.

I have a glock 19 gen5, had a glock 17 gen5 and own a glock 20 gen4. I have also shot plenty of rounds through the 19 gen 4 but on rental guns.

I prefer the Trigger on my gen 5 much more to the gen 4's. The glocks, for me,  arent like CZ or 1911 where part of the fun is personalizing.

Its very much a durable tool and not much more so I dont want to buy a gun that is up near $600 and have to buy a trigger kit to be happy with it. I believe I read that the newer trigger uses a compression spring rather than an extending spring but I am no glock armorer. All I can say is the trigger on the gen 5 has a lot less of the sloppy pick up and I much prefer it to the gen 4. I dont need a lighter trigger just one that lets me know whats going on.

I only recently acquired the 20 gen 4 and I am having to kind of relearn the trigger.

I hated the finger grooves on the 19. YMMV. If you look at a 17 and 19 next to each other they include the same amount of grip bumps but the 17 grip is a fair bit longer. So all they did was compress the space between bumps on the 19. I hated it and it never felt right. I much prefer the 19 without the bumps. I dont have large hands but meaty fingers.

I am sure its the slightly better trigger and not the new barrel but I was able to regularly shot head shots on a target at 25 yds with the gen 5 17.

The cut out in front on the gen5 19 was annoying. I bought some pierce baseplates that dont add any extra rounds nor do they stick out any further on the bottom but they fill the cutout and project forward just a touch making it feel like a pinky hook. Best upgrade ever under $20

It locks the gun in your hand and I can run off a mag with virtually no muzzle rise.

As a holster maker .. I much prefer the beveled slide at the front. The hard square edges pre gen 5 are not as nice when reholstering.

There are enough little differences in feel and shootability for me that if a G20 were available in a gen 5 I would have gotten it over the gen 4. Its a nice gun and how can you hate 10mm but my gen 5's just are a touch nicer. Enough nicer that I would spend a few extra bucks to get one.

I dont know how that wee tiny ambi slide lock could impact anyone but I have seem some people do weird stuff. I dont even notice its there. Considering many of the gen5's can be had from the factory with nice night sights and I dont feel the need to drop $150 on a trigger upgrade I say its a bargain.

Its still an ugly plastic 2x4 though ...:)

The 2X4 joke is still funny.

Thanks everyone for the good replies. I've had a G3 17, G3 19 and a G4 26. I've shot a few more and I loved all the stock triggers. I like all the grips especially the texture of the G4. I think I can live with the ambi release but I'd probably be better off with a G3 19. I'm cooling down on that purchase and may get something else for right now and get the Glock later.

Conclusion; I bought a Gen 3 Model 19 NIB from a friend. He bought the Gen 5 and an RMR. We are both happy. I'm enjoying having a variety.

I am a hard core CZ junkie and have infected a good many of my friends to be so also. I actually think I am due a commission from CZ!

But I have had Glocks since probably a year after they were introduced. I have had most 9mm, .45 and 10mm models but had whittled down to just having two. The only reason I had them is I like to compete in the Glock matches with a few friends.

Tired of having my P-10C kill my trigger finger, even with HBI trigger, I bought a Glock 19 Gen 5 as I have a couple of sanctioned IDPA matches coming up and I needed a pistol of that size to fit in the CCP Division.
I like the grip and with the smallest beavertail installed it points closer to where I want it then my Gen 3 did. I did a little polishing, changed the connector and a few springs and have it shooting pretty sweet.

I just tonight ground the teeth off the bottom of the HBI trigger on my P-10C and broke the sharp edges on the dingus and I hope that will let me shoot the CZ in matches. A few range trips will tell but it was almost as if the trigger was slapping my finger and it would get tender after 40-50 rounds. I will see if that is improved or something else is wrong.
