Which barrel bushings are threaded
« on: July 13, 2018, 09:47:30 PM »
My 85 has a pretty loose barrel fitment in the bushing. I've been considering the CGW 10x bushing but I noticed this bushing is a bit recessed compared to what I would normally expect. I started wondering if this was an indication of the threaded barrel bushing (I've never seen one).

You can see the gap in the barrel vs bushing in one of the pics.

My particular gun is a 1994. Does anyone know how to tell whether the gun has a threaded barrel bushing?

My gun has a roll pin front sight.

CZs don't have threaded bushing unless a gunsmith cuts the threads into the slide and installs a 1911 match bushing.  CGW and CZC both provide that service.

I was told (here) that my Pre B CZ85 had a threaded barrel bushing.  The front sight is a staked in (like a 1911) front sight.  That's easy to see as there's no pin holding it in like yours has.  The tenon on the front sight passes through the slide and a hole in the bushing and that holds the bushing in place to keep it from trying to unscrew itself as the gun is fired.

If you remove the pin (not hard to do) you should be able to tap your barrel bushing out using the 11mm socket/extension/hammer method I read about (on this forum, too).  It works.  Some bushings pop right out of the slide and some take a couple/three good smacks with the hammer to break the loose.

I didn't replace my barrel bushing in my Pre B.  I "assume" I'd have to have had something to very tightly grip that old bushing and hold onto it while the slide was screwed off of it and I didn't want to try grabbing it with a pair of vise grips and maybe gouging up the front of the slide.

While looking back at some old posts I see where I suggested the use of the right size easy out to try to grab the inside of the old bushing and screw it out - I have no idea if that would work or not as I never got around to trying it on mine.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Got it. So if I have a roll pinned front sight I should be good?

I've removed and Installed a number of 10x bushings in the past. I'm comfortable now with that process though it took a few to get my process down.

I was just concerned because this bushing seemed do much more recessed than others I have seen.

I'm pretty certain you're fine if you have the pinned front sight. Would be pretty easy to confirm manually but you could always message CGW or SP01SHADOW.

Thanks.
Still debating whether to leave it alone or modify it.

I'm trying!

The problem with CZ's is that they all start looking the same after a while.

The only difference being a conversion to SAO.

All of mine have race hammers, polished with aftermarket sights and grips.

I've done some extra mods to a few of them but I'm still looking to do something a bit more unique.

I was told (here) that my Pre B CZ85 had a threaded barrel bushing.

Huh.  Learned something new.  :)  Had no idea there were older CZ's with threaded bushings.  The two CZ's I own that have bushings are the normal ones that started with the roll pin through the front sight, staking the bushing in place, though my 97 has the E conversion with the threaded 1911 match bushing.

OP, if the bushing is uncooperative, put the upper in the freezer.   It will tap out fairly easily.

What I do and has worked for me:z
Drill a hole in a block of wood large enough for the bushing to fall into.

Take a towel and cover the muzzle area.

Place slide with towel onto the wood and hole.

Place on a concrete floor so there is very little flex.

A few blows with large and it's out. Even the really stuck ones come out like this.

This may be what gave me the idea they Pre B's were threaded into the slide.

I have a few pre-b's (not the 85) which do not have threaded barrel bushings. They are around the 1994 manufacture date

Do the have pinned/dovetail front sights?  Or the staked on front sights?

Pinned
I try and stay away from staked front sights.

I use an old 1/4 drive 11mm socket(I think) on a swivel with an extension. Rest the edge of the slide on a plastic bench block and tap the end of the extension with a small hammer. It's never taken much force to move the OEM bushing. One or two taps and it starts to move. I seriously doubt a 75 transitional will have the threaded bushing.
