Anyone Rit Dye a P-09 Urban Gray?
« on: July 23, 2018, 10:06:10 AM »
My slide is off being milled for an RMR.
Machinist demand I cerekote it, soooooooo......

I need to figure out what color.

I could do the slide in Urban Gray, but kinda wanting to dye the frame some oddball color that will match with black.

With that said, has anyone dyed their frame?

Pick of pistola

You could always get the slide nitrided, it would look stock, and probably would'nt cost that much more than cerekote, I'm having the barrel, slide stop, of my recently purchased P07, nitrided as CZ leaves the chamber, and feed ramp in the white. Myself, I believe that a carry gun ought to be as rust resistant as possible, so those parts are getting nitrided..

I'd just leave the frame as is, and just get the slide done..

I've heard of guys using darker dyes to turn desert tan/sand color Pmags into black looking mags.  Going from lighter to darker.  I don't think I've heard of going from darker to lighter with dyes, like turning a black Pmag into a dark earth, or desert tan color magazine.

Maybe you can do that, just never read of anyone doing it.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

No, always lighter to darker. There is a bit of wiggle room at a particular color shade but you are always going darker.

Agree with sOnspark you're going to have to go darker..with the color you already have, I'm thinking your options are going to be somewhat limited.. Black would probably work, Maybe a dark brown or dark green..Or you could just leave it alone, as that's the cheapest option.. The problem I see with that shade of grey, is the chance of a odd looking color coming out with that as a base shade..

Well, with the newer P07's and P09's you do have a couple of back straps you aren't actually using on the frame.  You could actually test up to four "recipes" (one on each half of a backstrap) to see if you can find one you like/want.  Then you could ask the cerakote supplier/painter to see if they could match it.

The only thing I have actually seen are the Coyote Glock 19X turned to black with Rit dye.

There have been many different colors of the Pmags dyed but have not done any myself.

I?ve never thought about it on guns but I?ve built quite a few self bows ? all wood cut and split from trees? and I?ve used febings die, it?s for leather it?s an alcohol based dye. It?s really good stuff, you could mess around with it on some gray pvc maybe.

I have. The frame is sensitive to the heat of the water near the picatinny rail so make a block to retain the shape.

Also,
There are plenty of options other than Cerakote. For roughly the same price as well.

PVD in different colors, hard chrome etc.

ZEV has a PVD in Titanium which is cool.

Just don?t screw up your frame like I did. I had a Canik in desert tan. I thought the color was a little light so I tried to make it a bit darker. I put it in the color and it did make it a bit darker but not much. So I decided to try a bit longer. I put it back in the same brown color that I just took it out of for a few minutes longer. When I pull the frame out it had turned gray. Not sure how that happened with brown dye but just be aware. David

Minutes is a long time depending on how much dye you put in.
I measure in seconds when I do mine.

Minute+ is reserved for a very purposeful saturated color when I do it. (Black or dark Blue)

It's just a piece of wood that sits in the frame... Acting like the slide would and preventing it from curling inwards.

Like a Lego sized block or something like that.... Just wood
