What are the differences between 527 & 527M ?
« on: September 24, 2018, 12:28:53 PM »
I have a 527M carbine dated "14" (which I purchased new) and the used carbine I picked up last Thursday is a 527 (no "M"), it is dated "04".

My "M" is a youth carbine but from reading, the youth model is a stock change only. Side by side the only difference I can see (I have not removed the stocks) is the shape of the trigger. One is more straight/flat and the other is curved. Other than that the barreled actions, bolts, trigger guard, sights all appear identical. One of them does have a thicker butt pad (The non-M if I recall correctly....they are at home I am at work, can't check that out right now, I also think the M is the one with the straight trigger).

I have searched for this on the Net but found nothing...I'm sure someone here knows.

TIA

The M designation is for the fixed sight, short barreled carbine in either 5.56mm or 7.62x39mm as from the factory. The 527 number is used for many different rifles based on the same action, but generally the M Carbine is the only one in 7.62x39mm. The Youth Model of the Carbine came out in 20165 and was the first change to the Carbine in decades. If yours i sused and shows changes I would assume it has been modified by the previous owner - does it have the same irons sights?

This is my 527M before I upgraded it to the CSR. Is that the same trigger? Mine is an '09.

The earlier triggers had a more pronounced curve to them. They straightened out some time in the early to mid 2000's. If you look closely the two cocking pieces will probably have noticeable differences. And the bolt releases may be different also. This is much less likely but the older bolt release may have a tab on it so that you would pull it like a Mauser 98. The newer rifle should have a bolt release that you push. They function exactly the same but look different. There is quite a bit of overlap in the two styles of bolt releases being used at the same time. The Carbines, Americans and Varmint generally have the push style. My 2007 marked American in 22 Hornet has a newer style bolt cocking piece and my 2008 17 Remington has the earlier style cocking piece. I dont know if someone found the 17 Rem's on the floor or what but CZ doesn't throw anything away, it gets used!

Thanks guys, here are two photos. The used one is the adult carbine ("04" Early) and the youth is the "14". The youth is 7.62x39 and is an "M" the adult is a .223 Rem.

I'd be surprised if the .223 has had a box of ammo through it so I don't think the original owner did any mods. He was in the Army and ordered it while he was in Iraq. He sold it as he "just doesn't use it" but he is a big CZ rimfire fan and a nice guy!

Thanks again for the answers !

I dont know for sure when the trigger change began exactly. I have two 527 Full Stocks stamped 95 (22 Hornet) and the other is stamped 00 (223 Remington). Both have the curved trigger, Mauser style bolt release and older style cocking piece. My next closest 527, an American date stamped 07 (22 Hornet) has the straighter trigger, newer cocking piece and push style bolt release. Your two carbines have the same style bolt release but the 223 has the older style bolt cocking piece while the 7.62X39mm has the newer style. The trigger difference is obvious. Your 223 carbine also has a Pachmayr recoil pad. My 07 vintage 527 also wears a Pachmayr pad. This rifle (the 07) also has a different checkering pattern. The center diamonds are larger than any of my other 527's and the rear bottom corner of the stock grip checkering is rounded (I guess this makes it not a corner). The bolt releases were changed when CZ revamped the safety. If you pull the bolts from your rifles and look at the bottom of the bolts the difference is even more noticeable. My first 527 (I dont have this rifle any longer) was a 22 Hornet that was imported by Action Arms in 1988 or 89 if I remember correctly. It was in the American style but with a black Tupperware style stock. It had the curved trigger, Mauser bolt release and also the older style cocking piece. It was about half way between a Brno 465 and CZ 527. But stamped 527. The more things change the more they stay the same.... or something like that.

Could be in 04 the "M designation just wasn't used yet, since that one is just marked "CARBINE".

I stated in my previous reply that "The bolt releases were changed when CZ revamped the safety." I should have said, The bolt cocking piece was changed when CZ revamped the safety. Also I dont think that I've ever noticed a non  M  carbine before learned something new.

Neither have I, which is really neat. There have been "one of" style CZs brought in over the years, some as distributor specials, so you can always run into a CZ pistol or rifle that just doesn't fit the mold.  This one is pretty cool.

I was looking on Guns International today and one of there newer listed CZ 527's is a 223 carbine no "M". It's an older 527 with a 5 digit serial number no letter prefix and the 223 caliber marking is centered over the chamber. Your carbine has a "B" prefix so CZ made these (no "M" carbines) for a while. I need to be more observant.
