Got this today from Copper Custom in Valparaiso, IN
It is a CHP (California Highway Patrol) trade in.
4006 TSW The great thing is that Tim (Military Arms Channel) takes $15 from each one that is sold and sends it to the California Gun Owners Association to help fight their crappy gun laws!!
It is in very good condition, with a few rub marks from holster use - but that is to be expected as this was carried daily by a CHP officer.
It's very cool to own a pistol with the history that it has plus knowing that it was manufactured only for CHP and not the general public makes it even more special!
I plan to follow up with a range report after a trip to the range this weekend.

Great looking pistol! Very cool.
-
Oh yeah - forgot to mention that it came with 3 mags!
-
Ok.. now you're just gloating haha
-
Cool piece!
-
Congrats... Very Nice!
-
How much was it? If I may be so bold ask.

$399, but remember $15 of that goes to the Gun Owners of California to help fight their crappy gun laws!
It is a wee bit on the heavy side but that is expected as it is an all stainless steel gun.
-
Nice looking pistol, congrats!

nice pistol. great price. Good luck with it.

Very Nice! 8) Congratulations and may it serve you well! :)

Super cool, and I think that?s the only 3rd gen that was made with an integral rail on the dustcover. I am not a fan of the riveted black ones that came on the Tactical models

Hey warbird, was yours as clean as the one I saw on the Military Channel. the one they showed on the video was as clean as a whistle.

Not quite - but close! A few minor rub marks from the holster.
It also had been oiled. I think the one Tim showed on the Military Arms Channel was dry (according to him.)

I was really looking to get one from them a couple years ago when they announced they would get them. Then delays kept happening thanks to Cali politics nonsense. I finally forgot about it. Would still like to have one though. Yours looks great!

Just checked - they're out of stock now.
If you really want one get on their email notification. That's what I did last year and now I have one!
-
Curious to know the weight.. ?
-
I believe it's something like 37 Oz. I could be wrong

I believe you are correct. That is the weight I see listed.
It is at least 10 oz. heavier than my CZ P-07 in the same caliber!
-
And then add the weight of 11 cartridges.
I'm very intrigued by this pistol and got on the waiting list.
-
I got a stainless steel Cz 75 and the weight is 36.1 making this gun a bit heavier ... Thats a solid gun!

Range Update:
Here is a picture of the first 21 rounds. 10 yds. shooting Blazer Brass 180grn
Not too bad in my mind considering I have never shot this gun before.
Shot the same ammo in my CZ P-07 to compare the recoil.
The weight of the stainless steel Smith & Wesson makes the recoil of the .40 feel more like a push straight back.
The recoil with the polymer frame of the P-07 definitely allows the muzzle to rise.
Not too much take-up on the trigger, a very well defined wall, and a guesstimated trigger pull of 6 lbs. in single action.
Double action pull was stout but manageable - guesstimated at around 11 lbs.
Then there's the reset . . . . oh my word . . . . the reset is crazy short! I thought the reset on my P-07 was short. Well the reset on this 4006 is about half that of the P-07. WOWSERS!!! Seemed like my finger twitched and the trigger reset!
This thing is definitely a keeper!!

I'm not a big fan of 40 S&W but I got to have one of these.😎 👍

Smith autos are so underrated. I have a very nice Model 39 no dash and minty 539. Hope to get a 45 next.

They just don't garner much interest with the average shooting public today but the 3rd gen guns were the go to models through the 80's and 90's for many law enforcement agencies before everyone went crazy for blocks. I owned several way back when and they were/are very well built and reliable guns. I still have my stoning fixture for slicking up the actions on those models.
Surplus models can be had at very reasonable prices but when they were in production guns like the OP's .40 Tactical were well over $700.

Warbird, do you by chance own a po9 if so could you take pictures of that and the 4006 tsw side by side from a couple of different angles. I would love to see the comparison.

Unfortunately I do not. I do have a P-07, but that's a bit smaller than the P-09.

Thanks for the reply, I'm thinking the
PO 7 might be closer in size to the 4006.
Could you take a picture of those two together good comparison and post it please?

Nice looking blaster!

Hey gang,well I got my S&W 4006 TSW CHP.
The only word that comes to mind is WOW !!
Mark at Summitgunbrokers was great, quick shipping. The condition I thought was terrific, almost no scratches and they were minor.
A few shiny wear marks but nothing significant.
The grip was a mess on the right hand side as stated in many treads. Inside of the pistol shows very little wear from what I can see, not many shiny holster marks on the barrel, in my opinion extremely clean inside.
The double action and single action triggers are terrific, smooth no stacking, SA breaks like glass.
Using the disassembly reassembly videos from blubelly2 , I completely disassembled polished important parts including all metal-to-metal contact points.
as recieve.
DA 11.6#-SA 6.10#
After: DA 10.9#- SA 6.2#.
This S&W fits like a glove in my hand. Instead of changing out the grip, I decided to stipple it , because I need an aggressive grip with my sweaty hands. Turned out pretty good.
All in all I'm extremely pleased with this and plan on making it my EDC.
-
That is an awesome and highly interesting piece. I only have one S and W but I love it.
-
Original msrp 700 to $900.whaaaaat.
Barely used by CHP. sold $385.00 from summitgunbrokers .
the trigger breaks like GLASS !!!😉
OH YAA !!!!!

Congrats on getting your 4006 TSW!! It is a fantastic pistol!! I know I love mine!!
Sorry I didn't get back to you on the pictures comparing the P-07 with the 4006. Do you still want them?
-
Warbird, pics are not necessary now,
I can compare them now myself.
after handling this pistol , now I understand when guys talk about handling an all steel pistol.love it.
I should be shooting it today.
-
Got too shoot the sw 4006 tsw,I need thicker grips for my larger hands, index finger wraps around the trigger and I pull it left, a little. Still within a 10" circle at 20'
Plus my support hand thumb tends to hit the front of the slide release.
Recoil is manageable.
Got a 1000 rnds practice ammo coming to get it right.
-
I've been handling, shooting, and carrying, this S&W 4006 TSW CHP that I purchased from Summit GunBroker for $385 plus tax and shipping.
I just might buy another, it's a no-brainer of a purchase at this price. It's going to be a collector's item being it was formerly owned by CHP and was custom built for them by s&w.
This pistol originally sold for between $800 and $900. The one I got and many others are getting are extremely clean and very little wear.
Disclaimer: I have absolutely no affiliation with Summit GunBroker.
Just a member of this form passing along information of a great deal.

How is the trigger reach in DA of the 4006 compared to the P07?
-
How is the trigger reach in DA of the 4006 compared to the P07?
I would say about the same , because I had to use the larger back strap on the po7. And on the 4006 I took off the Factory grip and put on a Hogue rubber grip which is significantly bigger, allowing the pad of my index finger to be right on the trigger.
I actually like carrying the 4006 rather than the po9, because the S&W just feels more robust in my hand.
-
OH , I forgot to mention, the reset after Da is extremely short. The sa trigger pull is probably 1/16 " and the trigger breaks like glass.
In DA & SA there is NO stacking or staging, or grit. Very very smooth all the way through the trigger pull.
-
Takes me back; these were great in their day.

Takes me back; these were great in their day.
They are still a great gun and probably the best trigger pull I have ever handled.
Check the I got bored thread I recently posted and see what it looks like now.
