CZ 527 American .223

Hello,

I'm looking at adding a deer rifle to my wish list.  Have been looking at the CZ 527 American in .223.  This would be for hunting whitetail deer / hogs in Texas.

Any thoughts as to whether or not this is a good rifle, good caliber for this purpose?

.223 isn't the best choice for deer, even when legal. Often times it requires a head/neck shot to put them down, as the small bullet often times won't do the job in the 'boiler room'.

That said, it's legal here in NH, and with the right bullet, I'm thinking a Nosler Partition in 60 gr out of that faster twist barrel, it would make a nice rifle. I loaded some for my FS, and even with the 1:12 twist the accuracy was fine. If I ever decide to hunt deer, I would try it.

I shoot a lot of hogs and a few Whitetail and Fallow deer every year here in Texas. I've stopped using my 527 carbine in .223 and stick to the one I have in 7.62x39. I often had to take a second and even 3rd shot on a larger hog with the .223. The best bullet I found for hunting with a .223 is a Barnes 62gr TTSX. The 7.62 rarely needs a second shot. The 123gr Hornady SST is by far the best bullet for hunting I've found.
