I've never had an issue with nics, nothing in my background to flag. Something in your background got flagged I would think you have an idea what that might be??? This is the site where you can file an online appeal  www.edo.cjis.gov.
Or you can go through an attorney if you like. Either way if you were denied and not delayed you have to appeal.

I think going the lawyer route is a very wise decision.

You can try but they typically will NOT tell you! You might be able to get info on whether its a State issue or a Federal issue but you will be lucky if you even get that.  I went through a bunch of crap several years ago and I was very very lucky I found a good Pro-Gun guy and it only cost me $500 bucks total ! I know other people that have spent "thousands" !  :-[ Start out by sending in a request to your State DOJ (Dept Of Justice) for any arrest records if you have anything from your past. If you have nothing anywhere then obviously its mistaken identity! I think you can even send in a fingerprint card to the FBI for $50 bucks and they will send back any records they have on you. I'm not saying don't get a lawyer but there is a lot of stuff you can do on your own without paying someone to do the same things your gonna do @ little or no charge. It took me a couple of years after being Denied to get things straightened out but I did it ! I ended up getting a Certificate Of Relief. I got busted for a small amount of pot back in 72 in College and it got twisted around through the years and good ole NY had a completely different charge in my records,, really sucked,LOL Anyways even with the Certificate sent in to NYs DOJ I still get delayed sometimes and other times it goes right through ! I did end up getting a UPIN from NICS,,, sometimes it helps sometimes it doesen't ! Let me know how ya make out.

Well I had a charge possession felony back in 97 and in 2015 I had it reduced to a misdemeanor and my record sponged so I good legally buy guns in Ca.
Ive bought a few in Ca. so either Ca. didnt tell the Feds or they havent updated there records since.
Either way the lawyer will find out........... granted Iam in Wa. now and have previously been approved for a conceal carry permit in Wa.
So confusing .........I only got the carry permit so avoid the 5 to 10 day wait ....LOL .....now the wait is on ......LOL
Just curious here to others experience with this problem

Ah,,I bet there is the problem someone forgot to tell the other one !!  :( Being a Felony is not good but as long as everyone is on the same page with the reduced down to a misdemeanor then you could be OK. Like I said I had a Certificate Of Relief signed by a Judge in the county I was arrested in so if they do that kinda thing in states other than NY that might be an avenue for ya. I know every state is different so check "everything" out !  Mine was just a Class C or D Misdemeanor so pretty trivial, it was like a $15 dollar fine,,LOL Well I feel your pain Brother & wish you well !
PS: Even getting a Lawyer you still might want to send in the requests for your "records" from both the State and the Feds (FBI) and see if they match. Yea the lawyer can do that at lots of $$$$ per hour or you can do it YOURSELF for some time and a postage stamp, that's my 2cents worth!  ;)
https://www.fbi.gov/services/information-management/foipa/requesting-fbi-records  I just looked this up quick,so check it out and see if its what ya need.

I wish you quick relief in this.  Unfortunately you may have to settle in for a long ride.  My experience with delays resulted in hiring a lawyer and overall the process took just over a year until I was assigned a UPIN.  Since getting a UPIN all of my NICS checks have received immediate approvals.

It can get denied for simple things like un paid parking tickets, or dmv dues.

Contacting guns tore wont do any good. All we get told is you are denied do not releasee firearm. Contact state DOJ most states have a person who you can go through and get an answer as to why. Be prepared to jump through hoops.

My Lawyer is two months thus far into the appeals process and NICS hasnt responded as of yet to the appeal.
I personally think NICS hasnt updated my files from Ca. as of yet ..........they seem to be slower than  slug.

I would bet the gov. shutdown will make it even longer. They were probably behind to start with, and the shutdown just pushed it further back.
