Load testing: VihtaVuori N340 powder
« on: May 17, 2019, 09:24:14 PM »
I wanted to load some self defense ammo to use against small mammals. I was thinking of using Speer Gold Dots, but then I saw the price on GD versus the new Berry Mfy 124gr Hyper Hollow Point and decided on the HHP.

I wanted to test the N340 because we haven't done so before. I've shot a lot of it, but never over a chrono. Probably could have used HS-6, CFE or BE-86 to achieve the velocity the HHP requires, but like I said the chrono as calling.

Everything was going great until I inhaled a gnat (which are really bad this year). That threw me into a coughing fit for about 15 minutes and killed the rest of the afternoon !

Background
Caliber:  9x19 Luger
Bullets:  Berry Mfg 124gr Hyper Hollow Point
Brass:    Win
Powder:  Vit N340
Max Velocity:  1214fps per the Vit load manual
Primer:   Federal SPP Match
OAL:      1.055"
Pistol:    P10c
Qty:      8 rounds each, slow fired
Weather:  80F, clear and hot, afternoon
Chrono:  ProChrono

Load      Avg Vel           SD
4.8gr        1079                 15
4.9           1086
5.0           1101
5.1           1121
5.2           1137                 14
5.3           Not tested
5.4           Not tested
5.5           1178                 18

Berry Hyper Hollow Point
> Recommended velocity = 1050 - 1150 fps (from Berry)
> Length = 0.536"
> Diameter = 0.357"

NOTES:
> I decided upon a OAL of 1.050 1.055" to get a substantial seating depth. This bullet could actually seat much longer in a CZ. Revised length for Win cases.
> The P10c fed these bullets really well. There were zero feed issues.
> Even with Fed primers there was no big primer distortion
> These are very smooth, easy to shoot rounds

I  would love to see how well they open up in gelatin or some other type of media. They look wicked.

Very very Interesting!!!  8)  :)

Since they are sized at .356, I would probably use cast bullet data with them.

From the Berry's Website:  https://www.berrysmfg.com/item/bp-9mm-356-124gr-hhp

9mm 124 gr Hybrid Hollow Point

Description

Our NEW Hybrid Hollow Point is a bonded copper plated bullet with a swaged lead core.

The Hybrid design was created by merging two developmental HP design ideas.

When loaded at recommended velocities, the Hybrid Hollow Point penetrates 11" to 13" in

gelatin with excellent accuracy and a minimum of 98% weight retention.

Recommended velocity = 1050 - 1150 fps

These HHP have been out for about 2 years now and there's quite a lot of data on them. The overall quality is VERY good. They also seem to be every bit as effective as Gold Dot at a significantly lower price. If you load a lot of SD ammo, then these are worth a look.
