Cajun Spice
« on: November 06, 2019, 10:49:46 AM »
I purchased 2 SRS1 kits and a Defensive Carry Package to install in my P01, SP01, and 97BD. The 97 was slated for the Defensive. Goals were different for each gun. The P01 had become my EDC, SP01 being an Urban Gray Tactical is a little long for AIWB, as is the 97BD, but I can. The SP01 and 97 were slated for mostly range and home defense.

First off, thanks to CGW for incredible customer service and fast shipping. Second, thanks to those who posted how to threads and videos for invaluable info.

The P01 install went pretty smooth for my first go round with tearing into a gun. I am a mechanically inclined man, I was not worried about complexity. I mostly wanted a shorter reset as I loved the short reset on my P229 Legion. I knew getting that close was not possible, but cutting down on the 6.5mm starting point was the goal. The gun shoots so well, not much else was desired. Installed kit, measured reset, was down to 4.3mm, not quite the 50% I hoped for, but I was ok with that. A quick call to CGW to ask a few questions (Thanks again for your input guys!) and I was good. Tested at range, all was ok.

Next I was going to put the SRS1 in the SP01. I changed my mind because the reset on the SP01 was 4.99mm from the factory. Previous call to CGW enlightened me as to why. The 97 was up next. The 97 had barely 500 rounds through it and is an awesome piece. Again, the reset was main goal to address, but the decision to go with the Defensive Carry Package was based on member inputs/reviews, etc. Again, the install went smooth other than one &#@# hammer pin holding the hammer strut. My 5/32" New  roll pin punch is now a stubby. New CGW pins are the way to go. I upped the level of polishing, cleaned, and reassembled. Amazing change in the 97. Reset down to 3.5mm. Race Hammer looks and functions great. While testing at the range I was laughing while reloading mags. Kind of a satisfying laugh at my handy work.

I ordered additional parts for the SP01 after the experience with the 97BD. I did not know what to expect from the SRS due to the shorter starting point, but I was anxious to see the results. Additional parts from CGW brought the thing up to the Defensive Carry Package put into the 97, plus disconnector from CGW. Since supplemental parts were a few days away, I took the polishing to include every contact point any piece had with another, removed coating overspray, and coated them with tungsten disulfide. I did not coat any new parts. Reassembling and testing with the stock trigger spring revealed the smoothest feeling pull I personally have ever felt. Reset was measured at 2.74mm. I don't own a trigger pull gauge. I will invest in one. There is no other lube in the gun save for the WS2 (tungsten disulfide) dry film lube. I do not have complete faith or experience in this stuff to run the gun on it alone. I'll use my usual product and go from there. I think this will turn out better than the 97.

Now where is the mailman and how's my ammo supply? ;D

Glad to hear that your CZ tinkering is going well. May your CZs run flawlessly.

Thank you for the post.

Thanks. I am sure they will be around a long time.

By the way, all three firing pin retaining pins were damaged. I am not a dry fire guy, so I was surprised by the extent on the SP01. The 97 was nicked. Low round count. P01 pin was more folding in on itself.

^^Not surprising from what i have seen. I did a test on my latest factory CZ pistol. Approximately 200 dry fires in factory configuration and the FPRP was gouged half way in. Changed the pin out for the CGW replacement without changing anything els and put it through twice as many dry fires. The CGW pin has not taken any damage.

CZ UB will get around to changing it at some point.

I love my CGW P07, it has become my go to pistol.

Having said that, I want to address trigger reset distance. I think it has become the "in" thing, but I question the need for real life.

For years I carried an issued Browning Hi Power which has a long reset, I had a friend who was in the same business as I was he was in Det 14, SAS, and started as a royal Marine. We had many a long talk about our love for Hi Powers, and how we both had never been let down by the pistol in real life shootings. Then we have Jerry Miculek who can make a revolver sing like no other and revolvers have the longest reset of anything.

Now having said all that, I do think without a doubt a CGW CZ will make it easier for a person to shoot better. I guess the point I am trying to make is don't get totally hung up on reset distance especially on a carry gun. Reason being if you are in a shooting pumping adrenaline you might with a super short reset pop off one too many rounds and that could change a good shooting into a nightmare.

Yoni,

My carry gun/s are my P229 Legion and of late, my P01. I wanted to get the CZ collection as close as I could to the P229. I have put 1,000s of rounds through it and it is muscle memory to shoot. My P01 is nowhere near the P229, but improved closer to what I carried for years.

The SP01 was not a purposeful endeavor to get the reset as short as it turned out, it just worked out that way from machining/manufacturing tolerances. Yes, I worked to get the whole action as smooth as possible, but again, the reset was a product of those fine CGW parts and CZ original assembly. My SP01 is mostly a range toy currently.

You are correct in the improved trigger resulted in shooting an already good gun into a great gun to shoot. In the Pa. cold this past Saturday I tested it out and I was extremely pleased with the gun's performance. Flawless. I had a blast even though it was a 27 degree morning.

I hope I never have to end up in a shooting. Should that unfortunate incident occur, I must hope my self control and processes function as they should. I'm sure they always don't and appreciate your point.

I don't own a trigger pull gauge. I will invest in one.

I ordered a Wheeler Digital gauge. I am still learning it, but a 8 pull S/A average on the SP01 came in at 2lb 6.5oz. My P229 came in at 2lb 8.3oz avg for 8 pulls. The 97BD net a S/A 8 pull avg of 2lb 10.1oz. Both CZs still retain FPB.

The Wheeler seems off and inconsistent with D/A test pulls. Probably is me and I need to work with the instrument a bit more to be consistent in the D/A tests. I had to do so with S/A as this thing is sensitive.

I am using a Lyman digital trigger pull gauge and i have also found it challenging to get a consistent read on the DA pulls of my CZs. I have found some suggestions in other threads about how to improve my DA reads. Putting the pistol in a padded vice to lock it down and establishing a consistent method in handling the gauge, as in do the test pull the same way every time with every pistol are two things that i plan on trying to improve the gauges performance. We will see how it goes.

I performed a series of pulls locking the butt of the gun down on my dining room table and that seems to be the way to go. More consistency in readings. For example, the SP01 for 10 pulls averaged 2lb 3.7oz with smaller maximum and minimum readings. I'll try a few others to see how it goes. Much better method than sitting on my couch. Good advice and procedure to steady the test subject!
