I would pick the 5.56, if I could find one in stock that is.

I just brought home the 11" Bren 2 Ms in 7.62x39.  Haven't shot it yet because I'm waiting on a Tailhook MOD 2 I ordered earlier in the week to arrive before heading to the range.  From what I have already handled, it seems pretty good even fully loaded.

Cannot wait until the Tailhook comes and see how it handles!

5.56 version, same easy to find mags and ammo as AR15s.
Easier to find mag pouches for standard mags too.

Someone would make a lot of money if they made a gas plug with suppressor settings. I’m surprised it hasn’t already been done.

InRange released a video over Christmas comparing .308 and 7.62x39.  They found at 8 or 9" barrels, both calibers in standard military loadings produced similar energy.  And discussed how at 12" 7.62x39 has burnt all of its powder, something like only 100 fps drop from 12" to 16" IIRC.

5.56 needs velocity to perform acceptably.  11" has tremendous flash and blast and you're at or below 2500 fps, which is the velocity needed for FMJ military loads to reliably wound/fragment and tumble.

Yeah, but 556 is still a lot flatter shooting if you stretch it out.

Plus there are a lot more projectiles available.

Take a 62 grain TSX, you will still be over 2000 FPS and over the expansion threshold well past 200 yards.

We civilians don’t have JAG dictating what we can and can’t shoot with.

I don't use .223 / 5.56 for anything anymore, especially pistols. Fragmentation in soft targets is the main advantage of 5.56 but the bullet has to be up to at least 2400 fps on target to frag.  Muzzle velocity of .223 / 5.56 is only 2400 - 2600 fps out of an 11" bbl depending on the load / bullet weight. Bullet weight changes require rifling changes to stabilize, which is a PITA, so varied choices of bullet weights is not much of an advantage. Vastly inferior barrier penetration, etc.

Though 7.62x39 has a trajectory, maybe 6" or 8" inches from muzzle to 300 yards, it packs much more wallop and barrier penetration. You hit anything center mass, even with that trajectory, it's going to stop it. Plus, 7.62x39 is dirt cheap.

Now what would really be nice would be a 6.5 Grendel barrel / magazine conversion for the Bren 2...

This is one of those religious debates. It's largely personal in my opinion.

I'm pretty deep in 556 rifles, so for me, I'd go with 556 for ammo commonality. If I was deep in 762, I'd go that route.

If you DON'T get both  ;D , go with what you have to compliment it.

It's why I got an 805 in 5.56; 6 AR's and 500+ mags made it a no-brainer.  It's my shorty CQB option, and uses everything I already have!

I am in a similar boat as i would like to have both a 556 and 7.62x39mm Bren 2. Based on this thread it looks like there are no conversion kits yet, but are there separate parts available? Can i buy a 7.62x39 barrel, mags, and bolt? Are there any other parts required? I have a scorpion already but I keep eyeing the Bren 2 and figure I should go ahead and pull the trigger on purchasing one. Thanks in advance.

I don't know of any parts kits in stock yet for conversions. I don't see any listed at CZ-USA. All I can say is mine is flat out awesome and I don't regret a thing.

Thanks for the information. I suppose I could buy one now and save up for a second one. It would be easier than having to convert one back and forth between calibers.  :)

That's the boat that i'm in right now as well.

I'm not relying on CZ to actually bring in bolts/barrels/conversion kits.  Ill buy the gun I want and call it a day.

I would start with the 7.62X39 gun unless you have a massive stockpile of 5.56.  My 7.62X39 is about as fun as it gets.  Its not quite as "fast handling" as a 5.56 due to the inherent lack of recoil in that caliber but its plenty easy to shoot fast with proper execution of the fundamentals.

Well, I went ahead and ordered an 11" 5.56 and found an HBI handguard in stock this morning so I ordered that as well. Now I need to decide between the tailhook mod 2 and sba3 or 4. If anyone has any information or guidance on the brace I would appreciate the advice.

I went with the 5.56 as it complements the rest of my collection better than the 7.62. I have a lot of 5.56 target ammo to burn and very little 7.62 right now. If I like the 5.56 odds are good there will be a 7.62 version in my future as well.

Thanks for helping me get to a place where I could pull the proverbial trigger and place the orders.  :)

Congrats man.  You're going to love the gun.  Its an absolutely fantastic platform.

As far as the braces go here are my impressions as I own all of them.

SBA3 is fantastic in every way.  Especially once you add a split fix.  Its light weight, shoots well and feels like its durable enough for relatively hard use.

The SBA4 is essentially a sopmod stock if you've ever used one.  Its got a fantastic cheek weld, feels extremely solid and when you incidentally shoulder it, it feels more solid than the SBA3.  The downside is that its larger and heavier.

The Tail hook is extremely well built but is my least favorite of the bunch.  Given that its rigid, and straight up and down, it does not incidentally shoulder well.  I find the toe of the hook sticking into my shoulder and its not as comfortable to shoot as the rest of the products out there.  IF it were canted on a negative angle like a CTR stock from Magpul, it would be a much better product.

Just my two cents.

Why order the HBI handguard when you haven't even handled the original yet? I bought the SBA4 because 9 hole reviews had it on theirs and it looks better balanced with the 14" 556 I picked up. The SBA3 might be better on the shorter barrels.

This review had a few different braces installed for comparison.

My .2 cents,

I'd go with the 556 for the magazines. Update the 7.62 barrel when magazines roll in. Hopefully Magpul will support another CZ platform soon enough with a tweak of their AK mags.

Maybe someone will come up with aftermarket support for a .300 Blk barrel by then.
