Winchester +p+ OK? Where?
« on: April 21, 2004, 05:11:56 AM »
I have installed a stiffer recoil spring in my 75B (sorry can't remember the weight off hand but it's not a lot more than factory just a little).  Am I OK to OCCASIONALLY shoot the Winchester 127 gr +P+ Ranger loads through it?

Does anybody like/dislike this round?  Where's the best place to get the Rangers?

            Thanks - Tom

Hello.  I've fired a couple of hundred rounds of the Winchester 127-gr. +P+ through a Pre-B CZ-75 with no problems.  Mine has an 18-lb recoil spring.  Case extraction was w/o problem and ejection was positive.  Accuracy was first rate.  I have also had good luck with this ammunition in Browning Hi Powers.

From the CZ, I got an average velocity of 1285 ft/sec with a standard deviation of 29 ft/sec.

While the link below is more related to the CZ-75, it does show a target in which the Winchester RA9TA load was grouped.

            www.hipowersandhandguns.com/CZ75.htm

This link covers the ammunition in more depth, but is from a Hi Power.  Still, I think it translates well to the CZ as its velocity with the ammo is about 20 ft/sec faster, same ballpark and probably same terminal results.  Such has been the case in my own informal "testing."

The link below shows the recovered bullet from a small deer I killed with the Hi Power using Winchester 127-gr. +P+.  The deer was taken in a game management effort and certainly is not a trophy by any means.  (It was eaten, of course.)  The wounds made by the bullet and the recovered bullet compared to some fired into wet pack as well as water are shown, too.

One place to buy this ammunition is here:

            www.proload.com/shoppingcart/find.asp?

Do a search using "Winchester Ranger" as the key words and it should pop up with other similar loads.

            Hope it's of use.

            Best.

Very well, thanks a lot!

I'm going to give a box of those a try within the next few sessions.

You can find this load at local gun shows as well as gunbroker.com

While this is certainly an effective round, I prefer using the 124gr+p Gold Dots from Proload. Performance, expansion, and testing is almost identical to the Rangers without having to jump through hoops to get it.
