Got those red dot pistols sighted in yesterday
« on: May 30, 2022, 09:23:37 PM »
Took'em home this weekend.

Shot the P09 9MM first.  115 grain PD hollow points and Blue Dot.  Took longer to sight this one in.  turned the darn windage screw the wrong way on the second adjustment.  I should know better by now.  The P09 now has an red dot/Holoson on it.  Range was only 7 yds.  Shooting off hand.

Shot the P07 .40 next.  135 grain Nosler HPs with Blue Dot, again.  Man, what a sweet trigger.  It was quick and easy.  Low for the first two shots, then a vertical/up adjustment and 5 more shots (so much fun to shoot something that puts the rounds where you want them to go.  Range was 7 yds. again and shooting offhand.  It was good to go so I moved on.

Last was the M&P 9MM.  1.0 with a 5" PC ported slide/optics ready, etc. with the old Trijicon amber dot RMR.  Only took three shots with this one.  The dot was where it needed to be without having to make adjustments.  Not a pretty group but where it needed to be.  Ammo was the same 9MM 115 grain PD HPs used in the CZs.  Off hand, 7 yds.  Still haven't found anything to make the M&Ps shoot like a CZ.  And the trigger?  Holy cow!  I thought it was on safe the first time.  Looked at it, not on safe.  Attempted to shoot a group, wondered if the trigger was broke?  Nope.  Ugly, Ugly, Ugly.  I don't believe I have any other gun in any of the safes with a trigger that hard to pull to make it go bang.

Two notes/adds.

1. My brother was down at the house while I was shooting.  He asked what I shot.  I told him the P09 9MM first, then the P07 .40.  He told me he knew there was something different about the 2nd one because it was so loud.  He said it boomed while the first pistol just sounded much quieter.  He said his cat jumped when the first .40 round went off and when the second one went off it jumped off the couch and ran into a bedroom to hide under the bed.  Shooting that P07 .40 is like shooting a .357 magnum.  Fun.

2. I let my brother dry fire the M&P before I went on down to my mom's house to clean the pistols.  Made sure it was empty, handed it to him, he pointed it towards the hillside and tried to pull the trigger.  He stopped, twisted it in his hand to look at the safeties, made sure they were "off" and then raised it again.  A second attempt to release the striker was also a failure.  He looked at the pistol, looked at me and I said, "I told you what a PITB that trigger is."  The next time he held it up he pulled the trigger hard enough to release the striker and handed it back to me and said, "And you mess with these pistols why?"  I think I'll need to spend some frame parts polishing time and change out some springs (trigger return and sear springs).  It has been too long since I actually shot a CZ and I'd fooled myself into thinking I could live with that M&P trigger.

Oh, one other thing.  The P09 9MM is still so "tight" that when I field strip the pistol I can remove the recoil spring/guide, turn the slide top side up and the barrel will not drop from fully up/locked until I press down on the chamber.  The P07 is looser, but still shoots great.

Now I can go back to wasting time/money trying to find something that makes the M&P (or the SIG 2022) shoot like a CZ.  Not holding my breath.

Edited to add:  I was pretty shaky with these.  Both CZs are capable of better (tighter) groups and have shot better groups at 12 yds for me, in the past.  I haven't shot a pistol since Dec. 2, 2021 when I took the new 2022 SIG to the range.  My arms and breathing sucked after walking up the road (uphill) from the house to get to our shooting spot up above the garden.  Fat and out of shape.  My fault.  Gotta work on that.

I was against the idea of spending the extra money for years.  Then my eyes just forced it on me.  If my glasses were to fall off, get knocked off, get broken, I would not be able to see the front sight at all.  The pistol is somewhat blurry at arm's length, let alone that tiny front sight (or even rear sights)

LOL. Took a new shooter with a new beretta APX to the range. We started with the CZ Kadet and he was going great. After 10 rnds with the APX I thought “recoil aversion”. We adjusted grip and focus but still nothing like the Kadet. I tried it out and the trigger, by comparison, was awful. I though it was on safe. Checked and flicked it several times in disbelief. Though he could get a spring kit or something, but nothing was on the market. Maybe it’s changed after 2 years.

I've got  some full size M&Ps and aa couple of Shields.

1.0 or 2.0.  Nothing is as tough as that one.  It's crisp.  No dragging/sticking/gritty stuff.  Just have to (almost) put two fingers on it and pull like crazy to get it to move that sear enough to release the striker.

I love the long slide look.  I like the reduced muzzle rise of the ported barrel/slide.  It dropped the empties (and they are hot 115 grain hollow points sitting on top of a compressed charge of Blue Dot) within a foot of my right foot.  But that trigger. :'(

Great range report and story.  Thanks for posting your results.

I'm still very happy with my P-07 and P-09 pistols.  I have a red dot on the original P-09 but irons on the P-07 and newer P-09.  I'm still partial to the hammer guns, although I have learned to shoot the striker pistols surprisingly well.  I still carry the P-07 instead of a modified P-10.  I'm just more comfortable with a de-cocked DA/SA hammer gun than I am with a relatively light triggered striker.

I think you have influenced me to take the hammer guns to the range next trip, even after having a great range trip today with the P-10F.

Finally got that M&P on the table with some springs/tools and did some work on it.

Won't go into a lot of details but when I was done with the mechanical part of it (one spring replaced and some stoning/polishing on the sear/striker contact points) the trigger pull was down to 6 lbs.  Still crisp and smooth as ever with the great reset (better than either of my other 1.0's were from the factory).

Still, 6.0 lbs.??  One of my college buddies was telling me about some new lube DuPont has come out with.  High temperature and moisture resistant and in use by some parts of the military.  He said you only use a tiny amount so that's what I used, small dab on the sear and striker contact points.  Check the trigger pull again and it had dropped 0.5 lbs. to 5.5 lbs. now.

So, 7.5 to 5.5 lbs.  Nothing as light as the Apex kits in the 2.0 M&Ps but I'll live with it, I guess.  Might try to shoot it this weekend if the rain doesn't wash me out.

Sorry, it's called Krytox

Krytox by Chemours GPL 205 Grease, Pure PFPE/PTFE, 0.5 oz Tube (D10170248)

From Amazon it was $24.21.

My buddy cautioned me that you only use a very small amount on what needs the lube.

Thanks for the progress reports on your 1.0 M&P. My very forst M&P was a 40SW full size and the trigger was horrible. The pistol was accurate though and handled the 40SW nicely. I put an Apex trigger in it and it was a huge improvement. I ended up letting it go years ago. When the M2.0 came out I got a 5 inch FDE 9mm for my wife and 40SW for me. The M2.0 trigger was good to go out of the box. The 40 had a little bit better trigger though. I have thought about selling my wifes 9mm M2.0 and getting her a P10F in order to be able to use the same mags with my P09, but that M&P just shoots so good and she likes the manual thumb safety.

My 2.0 9MM has an APEX barrel (as well as the trigger kit).  Best shooting ammo I've found for it so far is the Winchester 124 grain FMJ NATO ammo.  Found a couple other people have made similar comments about that ammo and their 2.0 9MM M&Ps.

Krytox isn't new.   We use it at work to lube medical grade equipment, have been for decades.

It's thick but slick.

Cheers
