My "Me Too" 10mm
« on: November 19, 2022, 09:12:18 AM »
It seems like all the cool kids are jumping on the 10mm, so I figured I better get one while there were still some to buy. Joking aside, I've thought about getting one for a couple years now, and the itch has been really strong the last couple of months. My local enabler called me yesterday and said that he had gotten something in that he was pretty sure I'd be interested in - an RIA Tac Ultra in 10mm. He knows me too well.....

I had originally decided that a double stack long slide was what I wanted but, after handling a couple, realized that a standard 1911 was better suited for me. He sold this one new in 2020 to the guy that traded it in. He had put one mag through it, cleaned it, and it's been sitting on the shelf ever since. The price we settled on made it impossible for it not to come home with me. Since this is a new caliber for me I didn't want to jump in whole hog on it just yet. This should be a good platform to learn about the cartridge with. The trigger isn't bad at all, but I'll be making it better ;D

Thanks!
I knew I'd be making this journey eventually, so I already have dies, brass, 180 grn. bullets, No. 9 and Longshot powder on hand. I'm looking forward to working up loads for it.

Oh I have BE86 already and plan on working up some loads. What I'd really like to find is some Blue Dot.

Very nice, sir, congrats! I thought about 10mm back in the day but never scratched that itch. Do let us know how she shoots!

There's a guy on arfcom that recommends True Blue.  Similar to Blue Dot he says but meters more consistently.  I've got some to try in .40 and 9MM, just haven't got around to it yet.
I just keep wasting time and money on other brands trying to find/make one shoot like my P07 and P09.  What is wrong with me?

Unfortunately, Hodgdon discontinued their copy cat "color" powders about a year and a half ago. It's really a shame because it was a good line at a good price. I don't know about True Blue, but the Red and Target are virtually a 1 to 1 for Red Dot and Bullseye. I still have 4 lb.s of Red (my favorite for .45 lately) and 2 lb.s of Target.

I think True Blue is a Ramshot powder and it's slower burning than Bullseye, Unique, Red Dot, etc.

Link to True Blue/Ramshot web page   https://shop.hodgdon.com/ramshot/#

Well, no load data for True Blue and 10 MM.

And, on the burn rate chart if appears to be slightly faster than Accurate#5.

Based on my understanding of what I'd been reading over there I had the impression it was a slower burning powder.

I did see on the burn rate chart there on the Ramshot web page that Accurate#7 and Blue Dot are pretty darn close to the same burn rate.  I've not tried #7 in .40 with the 135 grain Nosler hollow points.  I did try it with the 124 grain hollow points in 9MM for the M&Ps and was not impressed (but that could be the M&P ::)

Whoops! My bad on the True Blue. I haven't found any 10mm load data for it either.
After investigating more load options, I think I'm going to skip the No. 9. Looks like Longshot, BE86 and Blue Dot will get me where I want to be, all of which are in the $30 - $35 a pound range. At $54.99 a pound, I'm afraid that I'll like No.9 too much ;)

For the last couple of years I've seen quite a few people say they use Blue Dot, 800X and another slow burning, case filling powder I can't remember the name of right now.

I use a lot of Blue Dot for .40 and 9MM.

I got one can of 800X a few years back and swore I'd never buy more.  Doesn't meter for beans.  Way worse than Blue Dot.  Used it mostly in .357 SIG.

There's fairly complete test of powders for 10mm in the Stickies, if you care to look.

Thanks Wobbly - I didn't know that you had done all that testing! BE86 is definitely on my list to try.
I'll be taking it to the range tomorrow or Saturday. No reloads to try yet, but have some Ammo Inc. 180 and Sig V-Crown 180 to run through it.
