Seeking Advice on tightest/best fitting SS guide rod
« on: January 23, 2023, 08:13:49 PM »
Seeking advice from SP-01 SS guide rod owners on which manufacturers guide rod fits tightest and doesn't protrude past muzzle. I've seen a few pics of CGW ones installed and they look a bit loose fitting in muzzle end. I'm leaning toward CZ custom or Rival

I would stick w the factory polymer one.
But if you must, the one with a pointy front end might be easier to install.
You also may need the round wire recoil spring vs flat wire.

I tried the CGW one and it was a no fit so returned it. Pistols do vary!

My Sp01 has one of the CZC versions.  Without that tapered end i'm not sure you'd be able to get it into the slide with the barrel in place.

Fitting the factory plastic one, you have to curve it some to get it in there.

It isn't quite as tight as the fit of the factory s2 though.

Here's the s2 compared to the aftermarked sp01.  Sp01 is shorter, so not cross-compatible.  Just showing the images for reference.  Factory has the same tapered tip, although less so.

You might be able to get away with a shadow 2 version, cut down.  You could contour the tip as little as possible while still getting it to fit.  I imagine you'd still need the taper some though to get it in.  My sp01 is a relatively tight fit with the barrel in place.

I did attempt to fit the s2 rod in the sp01 and i was not able to get it in there.  Too much intereference in the tip when the rear is not able to get past the peanut area of the barrel.   If it was shortened it might work.

The rods are sized for the ID of the spring, not the hole in the slide.

If you want the $$$ guide rod, DPM also has an adjustable version with spring rates. I installed one in my 01 just recently and it feels different for sure. It has a pointy end too. I think I files an angled notch in the CGW one to make it a tad easier to install. I never noticed how they seated in the slide off center. still shoot like a dream so...

^^^This. The guide rod keeps the recoil spring running straight and true helping it properly perform and live it's maximum lifespan. The guide rod has nothing to do with accuracy nor the function of the slide.

Yeah, I'm not sure the motive for the tightest fitting guide rod?  You do want a guide rod that is tight enough to not allow the recoil spring to force it's way through the slide hole as I've found out here:  https://czfirearms.us/index.php?topic=99200.0

Other than that it is purely a holder for the recoil spring and doesn't affect the gun much.  You can get tungsten guide rods to help with muzzle flip but that is not as much an advantage on a metal frame CZ.

Cheers,
Toby

I was thinking he was going for cleaner at the muzzle end.  The CZC leaves a decent gap and the pointy part of the rod kinda sits where it wants to.  Functionally, yeah, the stainless absolutely does the job, but asthetically it looks a tiny bit (my OCD) sloppy.  Plastic guide rod definitely fills the opening in a clean fashion comparitively.  ALso compared to other guns like 1911s, glocks, s&w, etc it does look different, almost as if it's not the right part or the right size (just the doameter at the muzzle end).

Thank you all for your feedback. Yes, I'm looking for best fit (not sloppy), function, and looks.  Obviously fit can't be to tight. But I have some 1911's with close tolerance guide rod fit that are butter smooth.  I just can't stand looking at the bent plastic factory one, perhaps it's just an OCD thing..

You will not find a guide rod that will fit these guns like the 1911 since the 1911 obviously has a sleeve/plug at the bushing end and the CZ does not. Any of the above mentioned guide rods will be fine for your application but they will be the best you're going to get for that gun.

Check the front of the bull shadow or accu shadow slide and you will want one. They sell slides separately I think.
Glad to have more 1911 folks in the fold! Fuddrunnerz!

I use a CGW steel guide in my SP-01. Working the action is silky smooth. Functions 100%
