I would play up the angle that she won't fear them once she knows how they work/how to render them safe. That's all I've got for now....

Hello JRG5096,

Thanks again for the website. The quote below from www.corneredcat.com really hit home for the Mrs. I think we're moving in the right direction. I will keep you posted.

"As a card-carrying member of the liberal media, producing this piece was an eye opening experience. I have to admit that I saw guns as inherently evil, violence begets violence, and so on. I have learned, however, that in trained hands, just the presence of a gun can be a real 'man stopper.' I am sorry that women have had to resort to this, but wishing it wasn't so won't make it any safer out there. -- Jill Feldstein"

Many thanks,
Doc Newton, HM1(SW/FMF) USN/USMC

Pax is a great writer, and a very nice lady. Her website, corneredcat.com, is fantastic.
I would also explain the firearm is nothing more than a tool, less complex, less stressful, and far less likely to cause death or injury, than her car. And a lot more fun!

I say let her choose her own gun.  My wife did not like my autos and wanted a revolver.  She went with me to the gun shop, choose a Taurus 605 .357 magnum, and we shoot 38's through it.

Another issue might be....you.

No offense intended, but having her hubby as the coach might be adding intimidation and stress onto her thoughts about shooting.  You might see if she'd be more comfortable with a friend or even professional instructor doing the initial work.

Doc, I'm glad Kathy Jackson's website helped your wife understand that a handgun is a tool (as mentioned by Armoredman) and should only be used in a true life and death emergency.  I think you are headed in the right direction for sure....

As an aside, I was saved by a HM1 in Vietnam where I was stationed as a SEAL in the late 60's....so a special salute to you brother!

I agree with having a professional teach - husbands can be bad teachers, for some odd reason. Just ask my loving wife...

i made a game out of it. i bought her a walther p22 to plink with as an engagement present, and then started bringing her with me to pin and plink shoots. then she "graduated" to an SP-01 and has a USPSA number. :)

I'm glad you posted this topic USMCDevilDOC cause I'm in the same boat. Just about to post a new topic, until I found this one. My wife is uncomfortable with firearms and shows no interest in them. When I leave the home and carry the home defense with me, I feel guilty. I leave not only my wife but two precious boys as well. Thanks for website info, maybe it will catch her interest.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation sponsors a program called "First Shots" all over the country.  Might be just the ticket....

What about the NRA refuse to be a victim program, think that would help?
