Use right out of the box
« on: March 15, 2009, 11:31:37 AM »
As I'm waiting for my first handgun to be delivered to my FFL, I was wondering.  Can you take a NIB gun, mine will be the SP01 from CZ Custom Shop, wipe down the outside, load it up, and go shooting?  Or do you need to clean/oil it before you use it for the first time?  I've heard two exact opposite schools of thought, one saying "sure, no problem", the other, "you need to clean and oil it first".

What are your thoughts?

Your CZ will come dripping in oil as it is.  You won't need to lube it more, you'll see.  You'll actually have to wipe away the excess oil before you go shoot it.

Some people say the CZs come out of the factory with very heavy lubing, which might lead to pressure issues in the barrel.

Mine came with lots of oil on it, nothing thick though. Why not take 10 minutes to field strip the gun, wipe down the parts, run a tight patch through the bore (proves the bore is clear), then lube and reassemble?

Agree 100% with the previous poster, just got my CZ last week, it was lightly greased inside and out.  I dont see why you would want to shoot it with all that oil on the frame, so why not clean it.

I should have finished that last sentence with:

...then lube, reassemble and enjoy!

I had to wait 3 weeks for my ATT so the poor girl got stripped and reassembled several times prior to shooting. Never hurts to get more comfortable performing the task anyway so clean away.

Clean it and re-oil it.

Although I have never come across it in personally in any of the handguns I own. I have seen posts from other non-CZ owners that have purchased a new handgun and found metal shavings right out of the box (from being newly manufactured).

The 'oil' they ship it with is more of a preservative than a lubricating oil. Should be cleaned and relubed before use. My slide had a gritty feel and then after cleaning racking was smoother.

This is just an advise and is derived from experience military and civilian.

If you make it a habit of familiarizing yourself with any new weapon, pistol or rifle, meaning field stripping it, knowing and observing how parts are enjoined with each other and doing functions check on the safeties, decocker and moving parts before range time,  you will find that:

1. You can, but not always, be able to detect problems or major malfunctions before they happen.

2. Understand the inner and outer functions of your firearm so that you have a very good idea how a malfunction, stoppage, ftf, fte had occured and how to correct it.

3. Enjoy your first day on the range with better confidence and better understanding of your weapon.
