Slide snap back
« on: June 23, 2009, 10:11:30 PM »
When I am out of rounds, the slide locks in the back as you'd expect. Usually when I insert another magazine, most times I need to depress the slide release for it to snap back. Sometimes though, when the magazine goes in the slide automatically snaps back. Has anyone else noticed this?

Thanks.

Yes. If you insert a full magazine with enough force the impact of the top round hitting the underside of the slide it will sometimes jar it enough that it will dislodge the slide catch causing the slide to slam forward and chamber a round. many competition shooters consider this a desirable feature. As the gun wears in, it will probably happen more often. It is nothing to be concerned about.

Normal on certain guns as described.  I shoot both an XD and CZ that do it during competitions and it's quite the nice 'feature' for increasing reload speed.  Which is where ALL shooter loose their time.

Safety-wise it's a non-issue.

The only slightly encountered negative would be robbing the slide of that extra momentium from racking the slide manually.  Not an issue 99.5% of the time, but if the chamber is a bit too dirty you might not have the slide fully go into battery.

FWIW, you should not be using the slide release anyway.  Reach over and grab the slide with your weak hand, pull it all the way back and let it go.  In a stress situation (high-speed competition or self defense) the first thing you loose is fine motor skills.  Like finding that little lever with your thumb and not slipping off of it.

I agree i like it when that happens in matches.  Then i don't have to pull the slide back if i run the gun dry.
