What's your survival knife?
« on: April 02, 2012, 03:45:05 PM »
I just recently took delivery of a SOG DEMO/Scuba, which I reviewed here. It will not be replacing my old SOG Government, which is my primary survival knife.

The Government was replaced by SOG with the Agency a few years ago.  The Government has a pretty standard profile like the KA-BAR Marine Fighting Knife.

For fixed blades, my go-to knife is the SOG Seal Pup

For everyday use (general purpose use), I rely on the Benchmade 615 Mini Rukus.

I perfer these two knives not because they are the "best". Rather, I find them hard enough to stay sharp, soft enough to resharpen with an Arkansas stone, and they are able to withstand adverse conditions well.

Hey, Widge, I have thought about getting the BG for my wife's BOB.  Currently, she only has a Victorinox Camper, which is OK for a lightweight utility folder, but would not handle any heavy duty tasks.  So, do you like yours?  What do you consider its strong points?

It's strong points are (IMHO):

  • It's a Gerber - the blade appears strongly made, holds a good edge, the spine is fairly wide should you need to hit it with something for use as a maul.
  • It has a built in sharpener
  • It has a built in fire starter
  • The grip is well contoured and allows a fairly high amount of leverage. You can use the handle for pounding - although I saw a video where it cracked after considerable abuse
  • The sheath is apparently well constructed
  • It is fairly well priced and widely available

THIS would be my first choice ;D

It's not real sharp but it gets the point across.

or maybe one of these:

The one on the right with the bicycle grip handle is an old German blade and "has been there done that" It's my favorite camp knife. I don't leave the house with my leatherman scissor multi-tool (it's on my keyring)  and an HK folder.

My EDC favorite it the light weight Spyderco Manix 2 but for survival, I would prefer my Leatherman charge.

Those are the original stickers sent by Crimson Trace for my Lasergrips. I intended to put them on for photography then take them back off. I did not reckon with the superstrength glue CT uses on them! They've been there ever since. 6 years of holster and carry wear haven't made them fall off!

AZ_CZ, that's an FR-8, isn't it? One of those was on my short list for a long time.:)

Yep an FR8. Nothing says fun at the range like a Spanish rifle, with a German design shooting British radway in an American caliber using an Israeli sling.

I shoot a Czech rifle with an Israeli sling, Canadian aftermarket parts, and Russian ammo at an Arizona range. ;) Well, Russian ammo when I feel like using up some Wolf ammo.
