>You must accept the LOSS of cases due to their achieving suborbital velocity...

And HOW!  armoredman, Compact40 & I went to an outdoor range to sight in our 'new' Mosin-Nagant rifles, in celebration of his C&R  :smokin   a couple of weekends ago, and I took out the CZ-52 (acquired on the same shopping trip) for some 50-yard fun.  The brass went into the parking lot three lanes over from our bench -- about 15 yards!  (Sellier & Bellot factory ammo.)  In addition, each recovered case has a dent on the mouth, making the opening decidedly D-shaped.

Asked the local reloading guru about this, and his reply was "Don't bother trying."  I'm new to this aspect of things, and don't plan on shooting the '52 a lot (she certainly hasn't replaced the '75 as my "sweetheart"), but think I'd enjoy her more if I could make some low-powered rounds for the indoor range I go to most often.

While 'upstaging the Master' sounds like fun in some respects, I also respect his judgement, and don't want to play the game of "I told you so, and it only cost $1 plus an hour of case prep per round!"  :b

Thoughts?

About the only way that I can see you getting some rounds with a little less power is to reload them yourself. I sure intend to try. I figure a larger grain bullet with maybe a little less powder. Another thing to do is go to Makarov.com and get the 16.8 lb. spring and install it. That slows down the trajectory a little and I personally think it helps with handling.

How in the world would a recoil spring affect velocity??

I was talking about the trajectory of the spent shells. They don't seem to get thrown so far.:p

Bought the 18.5 myself, since only put about 24 (S&B) rounds through it, less recoil but still launching brass a good 10 yards or so.. doesn't seem to be any solution for the brass issue
