WD40 for cleaning and lub?
« on: June 05, 2013, 10:31:34 PM »
Tried to search but didn't find any info on this.
As per title, is wd40 good for cleaning and lube?
Opinions?

Actually WD-40 gums up and doesn't work well as a lube. It's good to use when you want to remove grease and oil

I would stay away from it as a gun oil.

+1   it's actual use is water displacement (WD) and not a lube. Stick with gun products.  If you need a single use product go with a gun specific clean and lube (CL)  product.

WD40 will make your gun a Jamiautomatic real fast. Its great for removing surface rust, grease and oil, but its a horrible lube. It will gum up a gun pretty dang quick.

Millcom TW-25B Light Grease for lubrication.   Stay away from CLP (cleaner-lubricant-protectant) as they generally suck at lubricating and are not great cleaners either.  For cleaning, most solvents will work well for carbon and lead.

Good thing you asked. :)  Always ask questions, I do.

"Go with a gun clean and lube product" is good advice.

To start a real long and age-old thread, ask what gun and specific clean and lube product to use..  :P
Likely a few threads to research in the archive and somewhere in General - Firearm page.

Common products to be found are RemOil, BreakFree CLP, Hoppes, Birchwood Casey, etc.  Everyone has their own experiences and opinions about what they use.  But, atleast these are gun products that can be found in shooting sports-sporting goods stores and aisles.

WD-40 has limited use as a metal preservative as it's carrier/solvent evaporate and leaves a wax residue which can serve as a protectant.

WD-40 should NEVER be used as a Lubricant.  There are many other more suitable products for that.

WD-40 works okay as a Solvent for cleaning, but then again, there are much better products for that.

I use Ballistol for Cleaning and as a Preservative.
I use Mobil 1 10w30, Straight 30w, and Petroleum Jelly (Grease) in selected areas for lubrication.

Everyone here, has their personal preferences for their own practices and the variations of which probably would result in a never-ending thread.

If you were to "WASH" your pistol (some do), then WD40 is just the ticket to remove water from all the tiny little little places it can hide.

For real cleaning and lube, you need a solvent for crud, lead/copper followed by high quality lubes of your and your pistol's preference.

Example:  I had a 74 AMC Gremlin ::)  The distributer got soaked everytime it was driven through deep water and the car stalled out.  WD-40 sprayed into the distributer fixed it in a jiffy.
Moral:  If you have a 74  Gremlin, be sure to have WD-40 on hand when it rains. O0

I've become a fan of Ballistol also.  I like the smell..   ;)  I've also had very good luck with Sentry Solutions "Tuf Cloth" which goes on wet, but is a dry lube.  Used it overseas on my M9 and M4.  Does not attract dirt and grit.  Use it exclusively on my HK USPc, never a jam..

Thanx for feedback.
I's incredible how sometimes internet might get disinformative: i've read about so many people that use wd40 as lube.
As you suggest i'll stick on gun oils.

Agreed 100% on the WD-40, Ballistol and 10w30. Never used Petroleum Jelly but use a synthetic grease from the auto parts store or white lithium grease from a spray can.

I honestly don't use WD-40 for anything at this point.  It's water based and will eventually cause corrosion.  Stick with Rem-Oil or Reel Magic.  But, the best lube I have found for the application is called Free with Moly it's made by a company called Certified Labs.  Hard to find but worth looking.

I use WD-40 for cleaning. I use Amsoil for lube...works great and a quart will last you for quite a while. Many many people use Mobil1 and it's more readily available.  I also hear fantastic feedback about Slideglide though I have yet to use it.
