Is it permitted to ask questions concerning the Sphinx 3000?
Thanks

Great, thanks!

I traded for a Sphinx 3000 yesterday. It?s the decocker model in 9mm that was imported by Sabre Defense of Nashville, Tennessee.

Neither the caliber or the action type are my first choice but when getting used you have to take what it is.

My primary choice for a pistol is a 1911 style so the DA/SA with cocked & locked capability would have been the preferred variant if I had been buying new.

A dealer friend had taken this pistol in on trade over a year ago and it had sat in the shelf gathering dust. No one had shown any real interest until I did and he acted fast so as not to lose a potential deal. I got into it VERY low!

With the exception of one slightly buggered grip screw the gun is in very nice shape. A good cleaning (from laying in the display case) and it could easily pass for new.

I contacted Sphinx-USA about buying some grip screws and obtaining a manual and they basically said, ?It?s an old gun that we didn?t sell, sorry!?

I have a few questions and hopefully some member can help me out.

I did download a Sphinx 3000 Operator?s Manual (in PDF) but it still leaves me wondering on two issues.

First, the manual says concerning the decocker:
?For decocking: Press the decocking lever downward until the hammer is decocked (see figure ? decocking).
By this the hammer is caught by the catch and cannot touch the firing pin.?

On this particular pistol pressing down on the decocking lever does absolutely nothing. If I hold down the decocking lever and fire the pistol the hammer will stop short of the firing pin contact (similar to a half-cock position).

Is there something broken in the gun or is this the way the decocking lever is supposed to work in contrast to what the manual says?

Second, the pistol has ambi controls (decocking lever and slide release). Therefore on the right end of the slide release axel there is also a lever. This prevents the side release from being pushed to the left (when the slide is properly aligned with the slide in the takedown position). The right slide release lever appears to be pressed onto the right end of the takedown lever axel and I don?t know if a gentle tap on the right side of the takedown lever axel would cause the lever to be released from the axel and allow the takedown lever to be moved to the left side of the pistol allowing the gun to be disassembled or not. And since I don?t know I don?t want to find out the hard way that this is NOT the proper way to disassemble a Sphinix with ambi controls.

Do any of the CZ models have ambi slide releases? If so are they similar to what I have described and how is the gun taken down?

What?s the probability that CZ75 grip screws would work? As I said the gun is super nice and the slightly buggered grip screw is out of place.

Any input and direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

HK. I see nobody has answered your query. There may not be much knowledge of Sphinx firearms on here. Never heard of a dual slide release. If you have things that don't work according to the manual, I would find a gunsmith that knows what he is doing. Generally a gunsmith will mess with your rare gun just out of curiosity and wanting a challenge (for free). I would not fire the gun unless I was able to check out the internals. Find someone to check it out, and good luck. If you can, post your findings. Im curious.

muggia59;
Thanks a bunch for the response. I appreciate it.

I thought I might give a little update on my Sphinx 3000 and our ?bonding?.

I was correct that a gentle tap on the right end of the slide release axle (while the slide was in the take down position) released the shaft from right slide release lever allowing the pistol to be stripped down in normal fashion. The right slide release lever can then be removed from the frame by rotating it ninety degrees counter-clockwise and removing it from the slide. There is a notch on the slide release axel and on the right lever barrel. A strong hairpin spring retains both of these items.

One thing that made the slide release axel a little more difficult to remove is that it had not been out since the gun left the factory and the original shipping grease had become quite stiff. The slide rails, frame rails, and barrel (inside and out) were coated with this old stiff grease.

I don?t know if Sphinx cleans their pistols after test firing them or if, like most manufacturers I have had experience with, they just pack them up and ship them out. At any rate the pistol had been shot very few times and the factory shipping grease had not been cleaned up.

I have been in contact with Sphinix, both in Switzerland and Sphinx-USA concerning the pistol.
The USA National Sales Manager informed me that, ?There are also some things to keep in mind regarding the Sphinx 3000 ?, such that the 3000 was a custom one off gun for every one manufactured ??.

As I mentioned I am pretty confident that this pistol has never been apart since it left the factory and has been shot very little since that time, if at all. There is absolutely no evidence of anything being broken or damaged. Apparently whoever ordered this pistol wanted the decocker to work as it does.

I?m a retired Tool & Die Maker, Machinist, CAD/CAM Operator, CNC Programmer / CNC Machinist and have a working knowledge on machining and precision.

I?m sixty-six and got my first real handgun when I was nine. In that interim I?ve had quite a few guns but this is my first Sphinx or CZ75 type pistol. I?ve owned some Custom Shop pistols from a Colt, S&W, and Magnum Research and the Sphinix 3000 is as well built, if not better, than any of them.

In years past I shot SAS CAS & Wild Bunch, IDPA, a little IPSC, Benchrest Rifle, and a few other forms of competition. I?ve been building up my own competition revolvers, pistols, and long range varmint rifles for almost thirty years. The Sphinx doesn?t leave me much to do although I might get the parts from Sphinx-USA and convert it to DA/SA with the cocked and locked capability, if I don?t sell it.

I took a few pictures of it and as time permits I?ll take some more and post them on this thread.

As I mentioned a few times this is my first CZ75 type pistol and I find its functioning interesting.

After a very thorough cleaning, inspection, and lubing I did manage to get it down to my range yesterday afternoon for a little test firing. The weather was not that great and I was pressed for time so I only put about fifteen rounds through it. As I suspected it functioned flawlessly and initial accuracy was certainly acceptable for the first time I shot it.

I have been ?thinning out the herd? in the last year or so and as of yesterday we have sold about fifty-two or so (I actually took the Sphinx in on trade). After a dozen or so I bought a new S&W Pro Series 1911 9mm that I had been looking at since they came out a few years back. I had shot one box of WWB hardball through it and so I took it down yesterday for a few shots alongside the Sphinx 3000 using the same handloads.

Both guns have been shot very little and hopefully I can get a little better with them as I have opportunity to shoot them more.

Thanks again for the input.

HK. Glad that all worked out for you. Also didn't know your expertise, and you have me beat by a long ways. Your "Used Gun" looks better than most new ones. Appreciate the photos. Seems to shoot very well to. Again, WOW! That is one beautiful gun.

mugia59,
Glad you liked the pictures.

It is indeed a piece of craftsmanship.

As an old retired machinist I can appreciate the degree of precision that went into it. However, even if I kept it I wouldn't live long enough to take advantage of its supposed longevity  :).

A guy over on one of the sniper forums who lives in Switzerland had ordered a custom wide body for Production Class a few years back. After five months and about 4,400$ he got it and thinks it's the bee's knees. I guess he's an IPSC shooter and on one of the posts he commented that in 60,000+ plus rounds he has had replaced the extractor spring and the mag release spring (as well as recoil spring every 5,000 rounds).

I wouldn't have it if I hadn't gotten into it VERY reasonable.

Take care

HK

PS Sabre Defence was in Nashville (before he ran afoul of the BATF) and I suspect that is probably the reason it showed up in our local.

Sharp Swiss pistol you have there I have been studying their current models contemplating buying one -your photos show the quality of the pistol-looks like it's built like a tank -very solid pistol. I really like the look of the stock grips. Thanks for posting the the pictures. Enjoy shooting it.

That is amazing Herman. The Swiss know how to make a gun. Sounds like he got a bargain if that is all he replaced and that many rounds. ;D

Brian: What model are you looking at?
I like the looks of the full size standard Alpha or the compact Duotone.
We have one of the Sphinx "range" dealers about thirty-five miles from us. I contacted him and he has the SDP in stock and as a range test gun. I might stop over and shoot it just for grins.

mikebaker1129: I don't know if CZ75 mags will work in this gun or not yet. I have a good friend who was a big time gun show dealer a few years back and he has some CZ75 mags we are going to try. If they work he'll give them to me. I have my doubts as the grip frame is a separate machined piece from the lower receiver on the Sphinx. The 3000s were available with stainless, alloy, or titanium grip frames. I'll let you know.

Riptide439: It is indeed an extremely well made gun. That may be why Sphinx has never been able to get much of a foot in the door in the US market. Generally speaking it seems US shooters shy away from high dollar pistols unless they are in the 1911 format.

All: When I get some time I'll put some more detailed pictures of the stripped slide.

I'm pretty sure that I'll sell the pistol in a few months.

Thanks for looking at the pics and the comments.
