Grips and the effect on shooting fast and accurate
« on: December 13, 2014, 06:01:23 PM »
So I got a CZ-75 Shadow to shoot while I was waiting for my SP-01 to show up from CZC.  The Shadow came with VZ Diamond Back grips as well as the stock plastic ones with the palm swell.  The SP-01 came with the thin aluminum grips and once I got my hands on that gun I started playing around with the different grips to see which ones I shot the best with.

I ran some drills yesterday with the three grips and turns out I shoot the best with the thin CZC aluminum grips which was kind of a surprise to me because initially I thoughts were they were too thin especially with the short reset in SA mode on the SP-01.  I shot a pretty good match today and was very pleased with accuracy and stage times which further confirmed my choice of the thin aluminum grips.  Prior to doing the drills last week I was kind of partial to the VZs for their grippiness, and did not like the thickness of the plastic grips at all -especially shooting DA mode.  For reference, I wear Lg size gloves...

I measured the thickness of the gun with each of the three grips installed and came up with the following:

Stock plastic grips:  1.275" at the narrowest point and 1.400" wide at the thickest part of the palm swell.
VZ Diamond Backs:  1.220"
CZC thin aluminum:  1.115"

I was also a little concerned that the aluminums would be a little too slick since they only have the little triangles of grip tape, but the results do speak for themselves... and now I sure like the CZC thin aluminum grips.  Come summer I may add some more grip tape when it gets hot and my hands sweat.

I've been playing around with my grips too (75 Shadow), choosing from among the factory rubber grips, the thin aluminum grips, and the thin very checkered (lemon grater) grips.  Interestingly, I'm getting best results with a rubber grip on the right side and the lemon grater grip on the left side (I'm right handed).  Its nice to have a few choices so you can mix and match to find the best combination for your hand size and shooting style.

Is there a company that makes precision cut grips made out of grip tape - similar to talon grips? I have a talon grip on my M&P pro and it's really grippy. I'd love to have that same wrap around grip on my sp-01 shadow.

Found them. Thanks. While I was on eBay I came across some stippled CZ grips produced by a company by the name of Copper Gun Grips. They were only $35 and the texture looked great. Anyone ever used their grips?  If so, how thick are they and how do you like them?

Need more grip tape?

I don't think it gets anymore grippy than this, these are just thinned and modified stock plastic grips.

Here's a thickness comparison

Normally I stipple or grip tape the heck out my grips, but for some reason I haven't even added any grip tape to the front or back strap of my SP-01.  Maybe its the cold weather and the fact that I'm not sweating when I shoot right now.

Shot a match today and everything felt good and worked out just fine.  I'm finding with the CZs my normal preferences are somewhat different.

I have a CZ 75 Shadow and I actually use the thin aluminum grips but I cover them with strips of BMX bike inner tubes. It creates a great grip for me and thickens up the grips.

Did you modify the stock grips? I really like the thinner profile and the grip tape. That's exactly what I'm looking for. Nice thin profile with either aggressive stippling or grip tape.

Ya it's a DIY thing, here's a thread I started sometime back that walks you through the whole process.

I like to build up my grips to get them to be more like the rubber grip on the right!   Example is P-09.

I have bought 2 sets of Copper Gun Grips.   I love the texture and had them on my gun for about 9 months of competition.  They are thicker than thin aluminum and thinner than stock plastic.   Recently, I switched them out for stock rubber, to get a thicker grip.   My fingers are long enough that there's no place for the weak hand "meat" if the grip is too thin.
I'm thinking of putting the Coper grip back on the weak side.
Don't mistake my high post count for knowledge or wisdom.   I just like hearing myself type.

Ya the palm swell is probably better felling than the flat thin grips but when it comes to speed with accurate fast follow up shots the all grip tape grips seem to work better for me, I've never tired it over the stock grips but I'm guessing it would make the DA pull uncomfortable for me.

When its all about speed I want that gun glued to my hand.
