22LR with Set Trigger
« on: January 14, 2015, 08:05:57 PM »
Interested in CZ.  Want to purchase a 22LR.  Very interested in the set trigger functionality.  Can't tell what rifles have the "Set Trigger"
Anyone know if any of the rimfire rifles have this feature?

eg CZ 452 Scout / CZ 455 Training / CZ 455 American

Thanks for the welcome.  To my understanding is a unique CZ feature.  You push the trigger forward. Then the trigger pull is lighter.  Seems ideal.

You need a CZ 453 if you want the set trigger.  It does not come on the 452's or the 455's.

Talk is that there will be a set trigger for the 455's somewhere down the road(they already had them out for the 455's and recalled them all), but they have not resurfaced yet.

Thanks for the reply.  Looks like the CZ 453 was discontinued in 2012.   :(

If you get a 452 you can lighten the trigger very well with a cheap hardware store spring, and with some simple shims can remove as much creep as is safe, and have nearly the same thing. I have a 452 Style (nickel plate with synthetic stock) that has such a light trigger I wouldn't hunt with it unless I tightened it up again. It drills dime size holes at 50 years and quarter size holes at 100, so I'm very happy with it. Cost me $1.47 for the lighter spring if I recall, and the rest is ordinary CZ magic!

I also have a 550 American in .270 that has the set trigger, and I do like the choice between them. Wish the 550 were as accurate as the 452, but some of that is me I'm sure. Only getting 3" at 100yds.

Be warned, CZs are very easy to appreciate, very high value, very high performing firearms, and at reasonable cost to boot, but don't tell anyone, they are growing in popularity and price so SHHHHHH!

Rimfire Central forum has an extremely fine CZ subforum with really great members, but be careful of the enabling effect!

Oh, every once in a while 453s show up on forums and in out of the way gun shops. I'm still hoping to find one, though I'm not actively seeking one. It won't escape me if I do spot one though!

There are still some scattered around.  Just be patient and keep looking.

First of all Timmy, welcome from a fellow forum noob.  What are you looking to do with this rifle?  Squirrels=carrying a rifle through the woods, so for me I like the handiness of the 452 Scout with a straight power scope.  A 452 or 455 American would also be good here, though neither offer a single set trigger.  Varmints=any of the heavy barreled models and .22LR may not be the best caliber though it is fun at under 100 yards.  Targets=all the other models with the trainers/lux/ultra lux models being the best for open sights as they have the tangent sights.  Any of these rifles will serve you well and probably be more accurate than necessary.  Hope this helps.

Mutedblade,  I've wanted a .22 rifle for fun for quite awhile but never "pulled the trigger" to purchasing one.  I recently visited an outdoor range to check out an NRA Silhouette match.  It looked like a great time outside and had a great group of people participating.   I've been told any .22 rifle will work just to come out and have fun, but I'd like to get something a little nicer with features without breaking the bank.

Timmy,

I've never done a NRA Silhouette match but I did just check out what equipment you can use and it looks like there aren't many restrictions.  Not sure if there are different classifications for open sights vs scoped vs peep or anything like that so take what I am saying with a grain of salt.  If it were me, spending my money trying to get into a sport, I would get something I can use outside of that sport.  That means, I wouldn't be limited to shooting it at steel targets ranging out to 100 meters.  I'd get something utilitarian, so a scoped CZ 455 American or any of the others I suggested would be fun and useful for varmints or squirrels.  There are a few modifications you can do to a CZ that makes the trigger better.  You can also find a used 452 in whatever flavor you want, should be able to find a deal depending on your location.  If you are military or LEO you can get a new rifle from CZ-USA at quite a bit of a discounted rate.  Remember, these "games" such as the silhouette match are supposed to be fun, so there's no need to dump your life savings into anything.
