Tell me about my rifle.
« on: March 16, 2015, 11:09:34 AM »
Although I have been shooting this rifle for some time, I know very little about it.  I bought it from a local store about three years ago.  I don't remember what I paid for it.  Maybe around $400.  It was new and unfired but had been in his inventory since 2007.

It's a 453 varmint with fluted barrel in .17HMR.  It is the only CZ rifle I own but I have several CZ pistols.  The rifle has the single set trigger set at about 1 pound in set mode and 4.5 pounds otherwise.  It shoots like a dream.  One MOA at 100 yards when the wind is not blowing.  I don't shoot it as much as I do some of my .22 LR rifles but, when conditions are right, it is huge fun to shoot.

The only modifications I made to it was to replace the stamped trigger guard with a cast one.  The wood and the rest of the parts are so nice that the cheap factory guard seemed out of place.

So, to the point, is this a desirable rifle?  I know the 453 was discontinued and several people have offered to buy it so I am curious about its place in context of the universe of CZ rimfire rifles.

Thanks!  Image follows:

The 453 is a desirable model. It had the shortest production run of all. It is the only CZ rimfire with the SST. The SST of the 455 was recalled and hasn't been reintroduced. There are very few of those out there.

CZ is currently shipping some 453's to OZ as a 'Premium Special'. Not certain what stock configuration, but it is limited, and it's said that this is the end of the 453 models. Time will tell if there are enough parts around to do a limited run here.

A 453 American NIB in 22LR , with extremely exceptional wood, just recently sold on GB for $808.

If you sell it don't let it go cheap.

Thanks, Painter.  That helps a lot.  I don't have any intention to sell it but, if need be, I will keep your advice in mind.

One question: Presumably there were fewer 453s produced in .17HMR than in .22 LR.  Does that impact it's desirability one way or the other?  Personally, I love the little HuMmeRs but they are more expensive to shoot and, of course, are not reload able.

I think the cost of ammo negates any advantage in numbers.

NIB would be the key to driving price, and yours isn't.

bucolic, I own a 453 American 22lr with a Bushy scope and it was my first rifle purchase. In my gun safe it has several CZ cousin rifles (452,455,527) and the cousins have been very accepting of it's presence in my safe. They ought to; the 453 is the oldest of the cousins.

Your 453 17hmr will provide with a lot of fun shooting and will shoot great groups of shots.

Enjoy and it is a very nice looking rifle.

Thanks.  It is hella fun.  I shot a fly with it at 75 yards.  Very humane.

It gets along well with my four all-Kidd 1022s and superstock  Frankenruger.
