No one likes 22 Mag?
« on: May 28, 2015, 01:07:26 PM »
Just talked to a CZ dealer today. He said the 455 combo on 22 lr and 17 hmr was available. I wanted 22 Mag but he says I would have to order barrel separately. According to him, 17 hmr is much more popular. Hmm, really? I was shooting a 452 scout with my son last weekend and now I need a Lux!

I switched to a Hornet. No ammo problems. Little bit faster than 22 mag. Shoot 30gr to 45gr.

to each his own.

i prefer the 22LR version.  less expensive.

i do have some 22Mags, but they are like out cylinders on my colt or ruger SAAs.  I dont buy them and i will pass on them.  Im sure there are others they will buy them.  to me any of the other RF not 22LR are just too expensive and if i needed something with more punch, i have other CFs that will do a better job.

used to have a 22mag rifle (not CZ) but after buying a Volguartsen 17 HMR I sold it and would never look back. IMO the HMR is soooo much better in range and energy.  Has become the favorite of the whole family from 10 year old on up.

Also sold my single six 22 mag revolver and bought a Taurus in 17HMR
When did it change from "We the people" to "screw the people"?

Why use 911 when it's faster to use 1911 or 9mm?

It's a handy cartridge for small game or pests the size of racoons or porcupines.

What he said and ... unlike the .22lr, it can be a reliable close range goat round, with the 50gr Federal rounds directed to base of skull, etc.

YES, I did shoot a goat with a .22lr self-loading rifle, when helping a commercial landfill operator to control possums and goats on his property and NO I would never again use a .22lr on a goat, unless it was absolutely essential to do so. The fact was that they turned up whilst I was spotlighting possums and I went for the two species bonus.

The .22WMR is a hunting cartridge, pure and simple.
A good shot at close range beats a 'hit' at a longer range.

It's a cartridge for us old dudes...

http://www.ammoland.com/2013/04/shooting-legend-tom-knapp-passed/#axzz3bsLhIBfl

The majority of my H&K, Brno, and CZ's are in 22 WMR, but I rarely punch holes in paper.  It's either for hunting small game or shooting reactive targets.

Maybe you just need to get to a certain age, or have shot enough stuff, to really like it.  But ya, a lux in 22 mag is quite a load of fun!

I do like 17 hmr too, it's great with the squirrels... ;)

I got a 455 in .22lr,

I will buy a .22WMR    AND    .17HMR.

both are handy for different reasons.  I have become a big believer in .22WMR.    more so than the light and fast club.

cheers,
K in MI

I like a 22mag. Never shoot it now due to ammo availability.
I see lots more 17hmr on the shelf, maybe I need to get one.

I've been using the 22 mag for about 35 years. Ammo got scarce in 08 , but has made a good comeback this year. According to my LGS's, ammo shortage was due to hoarding. I believe him because I done some 22 mag ammo hoarding myself. Last Fall I bought a CZ 455 varmint 22 mag. Its easily the most accurate rimfire Ive ever  owned or seen.  I use it mostly for hunting, and agree the 22 mag is a hunting round. The 22lr & 17 hmr are more suited for in close small critters and paper punching I think. Coyotes have a bad day when they meet the 22 mag. This 455 will hit pop cans all day @ 250 yards using CCI maxi mag solid total metal jackets. The CCI hollow points are good out to about 100 yards, but start floating around after that. I recently head shot a coyote @ about 150 yards. He was standing looking right at me, so he got it between the eyes. The 22 mag IMO has always been a very underated round. The 22 mag will penetrate deeper in ballistic gel than a 38spl, and will penetrate Kevlar. The wound channels are pretty nasty also. Head shooting farm animals for butcher are instant death.

This 455 varmint has an awesome trigger and is an awesome tack driving varmintor. Smooth action, great stock, and excellent finish. My only complaint, I don't like the safety. Its very stiff, loud, and IMO, backwards. I mostly don't use it and just leave the bolt handle up until ready to fire. Its much quieter closing the bolt than clicking the safety.
CZ got it 99% right on this rifle. Excellent everything, except the safety. I would recommend it to anyone. This 455 varmint 22 mag is a totally awesome rifle for sure.  My next rifle will be a CZ- 223 euro varmint. I hope its 1/2 the rifle the 455 is.

I've been a 22mag fan since the 70's. Grandpa had a Winchester 255 that I loved to shoot. 1 shot took out a chuck.
I preferred it to .22 as the brush and brambles around the Xmas tree farm would deflect a .22 where the mag plowed right through - even the berm of a chuck hole.

I eventually got a Marlin 25m which matched an 882SSV, yet once I received my 452 I have been tempted time and again to get a CZ .22 mag varmit.

I did have the opportunity to shoot .17HMR but after a miss by fractions, a failed to extract, and on reload I put the .17 bullet all the way into the case....

I'll keep my .22WMR favored over the rest.

Now if I could just find more Federal Game-Shoks -50 grains make a difference.

According to my LGS, they actually quit ordering 17 ammo. The shelf is full, and pretty much always has been. Its just not selling and neither are the rifles.. And used 17's are plentiful on the rack. There was never an 17 ammo shortage here.  I think its going to end up being and " oddball" caliber that eventually goes by the wayside. It looks like all the excitement over the 17 is over. Last fall when I ordered the 455 Varmint 22 mag, the young kid threw his best sales pitch on the 17's they had in stock because they were told to get them sold. After speaking with the regular guy I know perrsonally thats been there 30 years, he gave me the scoop.  I have nothing against the 17, but I just never really seen the point considering how good the 22 mag is. So why add an oddball to the mix when I already have several 22 mags ?

22mag ammo has got more and more plentiful starting in about January of this year, ( I grabbed several cases myself) and Our LGS says the availability has come back due too increased production because of demand, and say people finally quit hoarding so bad. I believe their assessment because I was one of the hoarders..  They say they are selling more 22mag ammo than ever. So the 22 mag aint going anywhere.

It almost sounds like the GS is trying to pawn off a 17 on the OP that he cant sell.

I too noticed the plethora of .17HMR.  No matter how bare the rimfire area was, there was always .17.

It is a nice cartridge, but I fear overrated.
You might do better with custom .19 on 223 brass. Friend has a custom CZ rifle that is so flat shooting it amazes him.

I even had to settle for .22WRF just to have something to practice with while regular WMR was absent.
CCI 30 grain is just starting to show up around here, but no Federal.
