Wow, thanks for the detailed response and photo, Igrlik. And You are correct. The safety lever seems to be slightly bent - i.e. there is about 1/2 to 1 mm play, laterally, at the two ends. Like the left and right ends are slightly spread apart. This play allows the blocking dent to slide around (up in the photo) the sear and engage. If I hold the safety lever against the frame, it will not engage. And as you said, when the hammer is cocked the sear moves forward and allows the safety to be engaged. I may try to delicately bend the ends together, then when it breaks, buy a new one.
Soon after I made my initial post, the trigger spring broke. I've ordered a new one and should get it next week. I'll work on the safety then.
