None Firearm Defensive Weapon?
« on: February 25, 2018, 12:27:14 PM »
Hello all!  Folks that work in gun free zones and also people that live out of a suitcase traveling (airports).    What do you carry if anything?  My wife is a hospital employee.  No firearms on her person.  For awhile she carried a S&w tact pen.   Which she actually loved writing with.  But it eventually got carried off by someone.

I believe something is better then nothing.  Just curious what other people in these situations use.

Thx

JP

I'm a pipeliner, not a personal defense guru so this is poor advice at best but...a Kimber pepper blaster could be used to slow an assailant and create space, and a fixed blade knife never hurts when things get ugly.  I'm not too good at following rules, and I'd rather be fired than dead, if you know what I'm saying.

A walking cane is innocuous looking and SOG makes some nice solid urethane ones. Just have to learn some simple 'cane-fu' and it helps appearances if you're a little older...

Small bottles or cans of optical lens cleaners or breath spray is also better than nothing.  I work at a VA hospital and regular pepper sprays, kubitons, tasers, knives, and anything designed to be a weapon are verboten.
If at first you don't succeed, get a bigger hammer.

A good sharp pencil/ink pen or a house key to the eye is always an option.

Streamlight ProTak 2 AAA batteries is a fantastic pocket flashlight that every hospital employee should own.  LED, good battery life, surprisingly bright and can be used a striking instrument in a pinch.  I carry one every day, squeezes in my shirt pocket next to my phone.

Jetcycles, I work in the security department as a systems analyst/admin at Texas Children's Hospital, a Kimber Pepper Blaster is an absolute NO-NO. A pyrotechnic device and respiratory irritant, could kill a patient. I usually suggest a quality flash light like a Night Core MH12, it can be used as striking tool or at maximum intensity to the eyes it can dazzle an attacker. It's also a very useful flash light with several brightness settings controlled by a simple mode switch and not the tail cap. The Cold Steel Pocket Shark isn't a bad choice for a Pen, it's polymer and looks like an inoffensive marker that lots of nurses carry.

I carry my Benchmade every day.  I use it pretty much exclusively for utilitarian purposes, but it?s there in the event of a bad thing happening.

Flashlight with a strike bezel and metal construction can work just fine - it's not a weapon, it's a flashlight...that just happens to be usable for many things.

Don't overlook the expandable baton. They collapse to a compact size and can break bones.

Carry my Kershaw or Leatherman every day. Can?t have firearm at work or even on property. Keep in mind your local and state laws.
Here, only a knife with a 4? blade or longer is considered a weapon, even on school property. Anything shorter is just a tool (a tool that will work in a pinch[emoji6])
Lol, seriously tho, check your laws periodically. I just noticed our definition of concealed weapons was changed. Never heard about it in the news, just stumbled on it.... but that?s a story for a different thread. Sorry for the slight hi jack OP.

Remember what the law says in your area about use and intended use, too. For instance, the people that suggest wasp spray are playing with fire as the can says it is a crime to misuse it. If you can get pepper spray, get Fox Labs or Phantom - I can personally attest to the effectiveness of Phantom.
A knife can be useful, but get some training, if you can - knife fighting can be an art form.
The civilian Taser is the best - fire, drop and run - it cycles for 30 seconds, long enough to get out of the area.

If you're a workman (or not) a long-handle ball-peen hammer works great on a tool belt...
