Title: Pistol comparisons (pic heavy)
Post by: Cyanide on October 14, 2014, 02:09:08 PM
Since questions come up from time to time concerning comparative pistol sizes, I've decided to share various images of my collection stacked against each other from different angles.

Some of these pistols you are going to see are no longer in the stable per se, and there are a couple I either just recently acquired or will acquire soon but have no photos like these yet (CZ 2075 RAMI BD, Beretta 8000D, S&W M&P Shield).

For the record, I am granting permission to any of you who wish to copy these pictures to do so in the hope of it helping assist with any decisions towards getting/not getting a certain pistol or, to assist when you are having a friendly debate with a friend or associate lol.

WARNING: Lots of images coming!

Cyanide, which of the pistols above are your top three and why?
Geez, you would put me on the spot wouldn't you? Lol. As of right now and, in no particular order (though subject to change soon with the acquisition of my Beretta 8000 D).

CZ P-01
Steyr C9-A1
CZ P-07

I will save my reasons for another thread, as I don't want this one getting sidetracked by any possible debating and arguing between any of us. Want to keep this one on track as a side by side picture comparison.

Steyr disassembly, though doing it one-handed takes practice, as the take down lever is backed by a pretty stiff spring!

CZ disassembly (P-07 shown). Punch is not needed to push out slide stop/takedown pin. Corner of magazine base plate works perfectly:

My apologies for the graininess on these, but I zoomed in on a couple of old, in-hand shots of the Steyr & PPQ.

Comparison of my grip on a Steyr M9 (identical on newer models), Gen 3 Glock 19 (my preference is Gen 4 models), and CZ P-07. The red lines are there simply to demonstrate hand position, by showing my trigger finger knuckle location, as well as the 'wrap-around dimple" where the webbing of my hand actually starts it's wrap around the backstrap. I've never personally suffered "Slide Bite" on a Glock, but I can see where the concern is for some.

I made a mistake in purchasing the PPS over the P99Compact. Sold the PPS and never got the P99 since I started shooting CZs. I am not interested in striker fired pistols so I guess I never will get one.
I am waiting for the reintroduction of the Beretta Centurion.

I just recently sold the P99C, and may have to get rid of my Rami D (backed against a wall $$$-wise, since spent two of the last 3 weeks broke down before having to go home).

Sitting here going through all the comparison pictures and I cannot believe that I have not thrown the SR9C into any of them. Going to have to correct that next time I go home, as well as the M&P Shield sitting at my dealer awaiting installation of ATS sights!

Ya shoot my CZ 100 you may want to acquire one for yourself FJ!

Andrew, I no longer have the Glock 26. The RAMI & P99C pics are very similar to a RAMI vs G26/G27 comparison. The CZ is a little shorter in OAL but a smidgen wider due to the external levers,  and they're both about the same height, whether equipped with the stock short mag or an extended mag w/ grip sleeve.

Not to side track, but I must say that concerning striker fire pistols I do see why they have their fans (myself included) and I must admit to the following:
If CZ ever builds another striker fire pistol ala the CZ 100 and/or Beretta builds one based off of the PX4 (especially the compact size), I will be all over that like white on rice!

Just spent a little bit of time perusing one of various Cabela's I visit in my travels across the country and decided to snap a few pictures of a couple of other pistols. My apologies for the poor lighting, as it wasn't exactly the greatest in there.

I chose these because I have one variant already with the PX4 D, and presently on layaway is a Sig P250 Compact (identical size as P320 Compact pictured here), and a FNH FNS-9.

Enjoy!

Tok36, you're very welcome!

On a quick (personal) side note, we all know everybody likes to mess with me as my CZ 100 is my primary carry (though right now I am wearing my Glock), so I figured I would add in another few pics as to why I love it so much.

Look at how short the grip is front-to-back, and then, combined with the traditional CZ backstrap arch makes for one extremely comfortable pistol.

Congratulations on the new Sphinx  :) ............and the new Glock!  ;)
You'll have to let us know how they shoot for You!

As for your Cz100, the closest I've ever been able to come to that, is my S&W SW9VE, which does have a different Grip Angle, but a similar Backstrap.
I've been carrying the SW9VE most of the Summer and plan to keep carrying it on into the Winter.
I have become more accustomed to it's DAO Trigger and have removed that horrible pigtail rebound spring, which makes the Trigger now equivalent to the newer SD9VE's.
I'm considering having the Slide Cerakoted flat Black.

Try again, minus the quote from Fireman Jones!!!

Hey now, not trying to interest ya in it FJ! It just seems that almost everyone uses the Glock 19 as the benchmark for a compact pistol, and strangely enough a lot of people don't realize there are plenty of awesome compact pistols out there, and they aren't named Glock!

But it will always take a backseat to the P-07, as will just about everything else ('cept my CZ 100). And you know those Walthers all went to great, loving, caring homes hahahahahaha. Once that first ever P-07 Duty melted into my hand, it was all over; my journey to the Dark Side was complete!

Glock does have a crazy low bore axis. I shot a P07 1st gen, and a G19 3rd gen, side by side. Glock had lower muzzle flip for the same S&B 124 gr ammo. Both pistols were factory. The only Glock that does appeal t me is a G34.

My P-07 isn't fully Cajunized, so I would say the PPQ handles better than the P-07.
Now the PPQ has a light trigger out of the box, many carry it but a good many will carry the P99 since it has the option to use DA/SA. Also the P99 comes in a compact similar to the RAMI.

That's easy, these four!

Right now, for overall use, my DAO P-07  is #1, followed by the CZ 100, PX4 D, then my P-09 MHS (gotta send it out to Stuart and the CZC crew to lighten and smooth the trigger pull).

To answer your specific questions:
1. Most comfortable is the CZ 100 (following it's full stipple job), with the P-07 on it's heels, and the Beretta not far behind.

2. Love shooting my CZ 100, but the Duty's DAO conversion is absolutely phenomenal. You would have to shoot it to truly experience the joy I'm getting from it. Thinking we need to organize a CZ Meet & Greet down the road!

3. The P-07 has quickly moved into my #1 spot but, if it was still the factory DA/SA setup, I'd choose my CZ 100.

Unfortunately, no. The scheduling always conflicts with my military reunions in April and/or May. Me being an over the road driver, I pretty much have my entire time off schedule mapped out every year in accordance with holidays and other special events with my son.

Thanks! Yeah, the grip was smaller front to back but so wide. The lack of aftermarket grips was unappealing to me. Neat gun, but the profit I made on it helped fund my new SP-01.  😈

I still wonder why Beretta will not make a 9mm in the Cheeta size, with all these sub compacts I think they could do it.

I'm surprised too. Lots of people like the Cheetah. I didn't like the difficulty of detail stripping it and lack of aftermarket parts. Then with its size ratios it's not that great for carry. But those are just my thoughts.

Sorry this isn't going to be much gang, but got bored earlier and took several pictures of my new P93 DAO next to my CZ 100. In the upcoming days, provided I can get back through the house, I will pick up another couple of my new additions and post pics of them, and hopefully next to the P-07 (it's taking a break from EDC so that the 100 gets a turn).

Then a couple separate shots of how narrow the P93's grip is when compared to the upper thickness, which for me and my small hands translates into a very comfortable pistol to hold and shoot, especially with it having all of the weight pretty much in the slide on top of that light alloy frame (unlike a classic Sig P-series or Beretta 92 = fat grips).

Sorry these won't be the best of pictures gang, but now that I have all of them together, say hello to the newest four members of my family (including the aforementioned P93 DAO)!

Some of you may recognize them, some might not since three of them have been discontinued for a number of years. Clockwise from the top, left to right:
Browning BDM, S&W 5943 SSV, Ruger P93 DAO, S&W SD9VE.

I only had enough time to swing through the house for picking these up, and won't be able to get to the range to run some rounds through them until week after next, since next weekend when I get home I will be immediately picking up my son and going out of town for a few days doing stuff for his 17th birthday.

A quick, yet very rough shot of them side-by-side in order of the CZ 100, BDM, 5943, P93, and SD9VE, and then other comparison shots will be with my CZ 100 as the benchmark since one, it's still my #1 EDC, and two, it's almost identical in dimensions to my, okay, our beloved P-07 and the world renowned Glock 19.

I will say this, the Browning BDM grip is freaking tiny for a double stack 9mm (even though mine only has the 10 rd mags, regular capacity was 15).

I'm also going to pick up a straight backstrap grip panel for the 5943, just to make it a tiny bit more comfortable. And then, night sights will be ordered and installed on all that have the option available.

More later!

Nice bunch of newer handguns! 8)  Congratulations and may they serve you well!   :)

I have your SD9VE's direct ancestor, the SW9VE, albeit with a slight Trigger Job removing that horrible pigtail Spring.
Quite recently, I installed a green Fiber Optic Front Sight.  I carry it often.

The 5943 is a hoot to shoot with that pre-cocked DAO. Definitely feels better for me with a straight backstrap.

JWC, thanks as always! The trigger pull on mine doesn't feel really all that bad compared to the original, older models. Dare I say I actually like it, because it reminds me of a true double action trigger.

Can't wait Psyop! I swear I must've dry fired it alone at least 200x yesterday lol. Yeah, I myself am definitely digging on this trigger; it reminds me of my CZC DAO-converted P-07 with how smooth it is, just with a shorter trigger pull, obviously no second-strike capability, and it feels just a little heavier in the pull weight. It also feels really good in my hand as well, right up there with my CZ 100 and P-07, just with a slightly more hand filling grip.

A comparison picture for old-time nostalgia! The S&W 5943 SSV and Ruger P93. My apologies for the glare off of the slides, as I had to use the flash to minimize the shadows caused by the available lighting I had.

Now back to more modern stuff hahaha. In all honesty, I can't believe I forgot to upload this picture months ago, especially since the XD9 has been sold off, and the Glock might not be too far behind it if it doesn't straighten it's act up!

Finally getting around to adding a few new images in here for y'all to dissect/critique/laugh at hahaha. There will still be a few more to come in the future!

If you have a caliper, can you tell us what the grip width of the P-07 and FNP are?

I don't have a caliper, but I do have a metal tape measure. Sorry for the crude method of measuring but hopefully this will give you an idea to try answering your question.

A new set of images of couple new additions to the family. This segment will include my Bersa Thunder 380 Plus, RAMI BD, and SCCY CPX-2. My apologies for not getting all of the angles/sizes matched up.

And yes, I know, all the images show the RAMI with it's extended mag and sleeve in place. Wanted to give a fair representation since the Bersa is a 15+1. I'll add more images later of it (RAMI) with the flush 10-rd mag separately beside the SCCY, as it's also 10+1.

A quick update with some pictures provided by a good friend of mine who just picked up his CZ P10 C earlier today, and sent me a few shots of it next to his P-07 Duty so everyone could get an idea of how they compare in size.

Personally, I'm sticking with my CZ 100, DAO P-07, and Glock 23 for now. As for him, here's what he had to say:

"Well, it's here. Didn't get taken like some of the blokes, but still paid more than the LGS (when they show up). I know people wanted some comparisons to the P-07. I tossed a TLR on it since that's how I run the P-07.

1st thoughts. I'll come right out and say the trigger isn't to die for like the reviews are all saying. It's crisp for a stock trigger, the reset is short. It's still pretty darn stiff. I dry fired it a couple hundred times. Maybe slightly better. I measured 5.5-6lbs. I talked with the guy at Cajun GW, no parts yet but soon. The mag release also very stiff.

Feel is nice. Fills out my hand better than the P-07 with the medium back strap. The thickest one mimics the VP9/PPQ design. I'd say medium is similar to XDM. Grip angle is comfy and natural. This is the most course grip I've ever felt on a gun. The FNX had a rough diamond grip. This one is like a mud tire (for the dirt bike crowd). Light switch reach is noticeably further, but still within reason.

Fits the FNS holster with the TLR. I picked up a Glock 17 holster that fits without the light. Sights are the newer CZ 3-dot. They glow when charged, but aren't considered 'night sights'. The mags are backwards compatible with the P-07, but the ambi mag release hole doesn't let the 07 mags work. The newer P-09 mags do not work. I'll play with a couple 07 mags to see if I can fix that part. The base pads are slightly thicker on the P10 mags. I'll see if I get some time within the next couple days to take it to the range."

That's why I still have the full-size DAO model, slick slide! Though the slide mounted lever doesn't bother me when it is configured as a "G" model (decock-only).

I got a Shield in 9mm for my daughter and I to compare to the LC9S and she likes it and shoots it well enough that I'm going to give it to her. They're very similar but we both shoot the Shield better than the LC9S. I do like the LC9S for the melted edges, etc... The LC9S is definitely 'snappier' to shoot. The Shield has a trigger pull of around 5.5 lbs and the LC9S is around 4.5 lbs. I'm planning on replacing the Ruger with a Sig P290RS for my subcompact carry since my other carry pieces are DA first pull but I'll keep it as a boat gun or whatever. Anyway, I decided to take some comparison shots. They both have the Hogue HANDALL S&W M&P Shield/Ruger LC9 Beavertail Grip Sleeve installed and both have their flush-fit mags for comparison. I'm fairly slim but I can pocket-carry either in jeans with those mags/baseplates

And since many are chomping at the bit for the future full size P-10, here's the P-10 C and P-09 MHS:

Properly lined up, with their trigger guards even:

I got a SIG P290RS awhile ago and since I posted a comparison between the LC9S and the Shield, I thought I'd compare the RS to the LC. They both have their flush mags for comparison purposes. Obviously the RS has a heavier, DAO trigger compared to the LC9S. The felt recoil is much less with the RS, probably due in part to the heavier weigh of it (20.5 oz vs 17 oz). Although heavier, the RS is slightly smaller than the LC and in my opinion it's just enough of a difference to make it a better pocket carry experience. I took a photo of each in the same pocket holster to get a sense of how the LC sticks out a bit more in both directions.

CZ-75 SP-01 Tactical (9x19mm) and CZ-97BD (.45 ACP). They are virtually identical in weight when both are in full loadout condition.  Dimensionally there are some differences, but for all intents, they are very, very similar overall.

Been meaning to do this one for a while, and now can finally get around to it. Nothing major, just a couple of my relatively newer, repeated additions.

Beretta PX4 Compact and HK P2000SK

Two points; one is the obvious fact that I used both my P2KSK V3 AND V2 LEM for the shots. Two, the bottom image shows the HK with the newer 13-rd mag intended for the P30 SK/VP9SK to demonstrate height comparison. It makes a world of difference to me, in spite of carrying a couple less rounds. Works fine in spite of not matching the P2000SK?s aesthetics.

Now to get the Beretta ?fixed up? haha. Working on possibly converting it to DAO like my factory full-size ?D? Model, and of that doesn?t pan out I?ll just go the route of a ?G? conversion with slim decock levers. Either way, putting the filler plug in place of the right side slide stop/release lever and adding night sights very soon as well.

This is truly a great thread, thank you Cyanide!
You?re very welcome!

Quick update as promised. My apologies for so many shots of the Glock, just figured I’d better include a few comparisons of it before it leaves my inventory.

Glock 26 vs Sig P365:

Glock 26 vs HK P2000SK:

Glock 26 vs Beretta PX4 Compact:

I’m throwing this last image in to show relationship of the actual grip length. The Glock is wearing a simple Pearce finger extension that offers no capacity increase.

Without the extension, that Glock 26's grip would be waaaaay too short for me and I would want some sort of capacity increase with an extension.

Congratulations on the Sig P365! 8)  Very Nice!!!  :)

Thanks, though I never compare factory numbers. They typically refer to the widest point, such as the slide stop for the width, which is not really relevant for concealed carry. Width of the butt is much better, but never given.

1/8 of an inch here 1/8 of an inch there doesn't make much of a difference. Sometimes not even that.
Something I don't even really worried about if fits  my hand well and shoots very well I'll carry it.

JWC007, thank you! No, I haven’t. Pretty well set on what I’ve currently got and have a few other things on layaway still to acquire. LOL

Speaking of DAO, friend of mine who’s a bigger Beretta fan than I am is converting my PX4 Compact to DAO for me with what should end up around a 7 lb. or so trigger pull, right in line with my DAO P-07 Duty, P-09 MHS, and PX4 D Full-size. Hehehehehe

But back to what I currently have, here’s the trigger pull on the new Night Cobra, seems to be around 8 or 9 pounds, and very smooth!

2 that might be of interest: CZ P01 vs Beretta PX4 Compact carry. They're basically the same size and weight.

Unloaded weight:  CZ P01: 28.1 ounces Beretta PX4 CC: 27.4 ounces

Width: CZ P01: 1.38 inches  Beretta PX4 CC: 1.4 inches.

Length: CZ P01: 7.2 inches Beretta PX4 CC: 6.8 inches

Height: CZ P01: 5 inches  Beretta PX4 CC: 5 inches.

Please note in the photos I have 92 style decocker levers on the PX4 CC. When used for carry I have the flat "stealth" levers installed. The 92 style levers are easier to decock when running a bunch of 1st shot DA then 2 SA drills.

The trigger on the Beretta is better, I've installed the LTT 11 pound hammer spring, it already had the Competition Trigger Group installed at the factory. The CZ is still stock at this time. I will be installing a CGW Defensive carry package in the near future.

Accuracy is ammo dependent. Best defense load for the CZ P01 is 124gr +P Gold Dots followed closely by 124gr +p Golden Sabers.  Best defense loads in the Beretta PX4 CC 147gr HST followed by 147gr Gold Dots.  Both group about the same with my 115gr and 147gr FMJ reloads.

My wife shoots the P01 slightly better, I shoot the CC slightly better. Enough to trade or sell off one or the other? Nope.

The Beretta hold 1 more round, I don't consider that a big deal at all.
