Welcome to the forum and congratulations on becoming a full fledged American with your first gun purchase. Smart choice with the P-01.
I don't fuss around a lot with cosmetic changes to my guns. Not saying its should or shouldn't be done. My main focus with firearms is competition shooting so any money or time spent is on my guns is to improve reliability or shoot-ability of them or improving my shooting skill.
That all said, I'm a relatively new gun owner myself. I bought my first gun about 3.5 years ago. I went through a progression with my interaction with my guns. Early on, I cared a lot about aesthetics. Form was more important than function. I changed out grips because they looked cool, not because they functioned better for me. I used to get really bent when the finish got nicked. This stuff was important to me.
I then started to tinker with the internals. I went down the rabbit hole of chasing the "perfect" trigger. Swapping parts. Polishing parts. Etc. I say perfect in quotes because I really didn't understand what makes a good, practical action. It was all about getting the lightest trigger pull possible.
My next and sort of where I am today is when I started to focus more on actually becoming proficient at gun handling and marksmanship. Practical marksmanship. Soon after I discovered USPSA competition shooting. This is when I realized what I truly enjoyed about firearms. To shoot the guns, not admire them.
I realized that lightest trigger pull is not really what makes a great trigger. I understood that having a reliable pistol trumps everything else and that often, many of the mods that we do make a pistol less reliable. I learned that gun handling is just as important as marksmanship. I now look at my guns as tools of my competition shooting. What they look like is of no importance to me. How they feel in my hand, do they complete the task without a hiccup, can I handle and shoot them to the best of my current ability is what drives everything I do to them.
I just realized that I don't think I answered your question. My apologies. I was gonna delete and start over but maybe you'll glean something from my musings.
