CZ Rimfire Accuracy

Depending on your use, I would look very hard at the .17HMR.

I had a .22WMR concurrently with my .17HMR's....the .22 never got used.  With the .22WMR I struggled to get MOA; the .17's struggle to get over MOA; the trajectory to subsonic is flatter.  The .22WMR has more energy; so if you have pest eradicating, having a slightly bigger bullet that punches in a little deeper might do something for you.  For me, I've found the .17 HMR has plenty of energy, and capability; I've taken several badgers and several coyotes while gopher shooting.

I am fairly studious in my attention to ammo prices and availability; I shoot high volume gophers in the spring, so price per round and availability is a major concern for me.  The .17HMR was almost unaffected during the last couple scares; .22WMR got scarce.  I prefer the 17 gr Vmax load from Hornady; I generally pay .16 a round for it.  This means buying in bulk when things go on sale; usually it happens this time of year.  Murdochs (an agricultural chain store here in MT and surrounding states) currently has the Hornady 200 rd pack for $32.00 - 16 cents a round on the shelf.  The .22WMR in the 30 Gr Vmax (the preferred load for my rifle) was usually around 22 cents a round under similar circumstance.
The .17HMR has enough different bullet choices to compete and for the most part equal the
.22WMR but with superior accuracy.

Small Light skinned animals I?ll use the typical.17 plastic tipped and for bigger or thick skinned animals ?like wood chucks or coyotes .17 hollow point 17gr or 20gr depending.

I have had the 17gr hollow almost exit opposite shoulder of a coyote.
My Marlin .22 mag has been in the safe since I got my Marlin 17v. and haven?t felt the need to buy more .17s yet.

All my cz455?s have been tax drivers with little tweaking out of the box.

My experience with newer CZ?s and 22 wmr has been lackluster at best.

I have a Brno zkm 611 and hk300 that are capable of moa with most quality ammo and will hold 3/4? at 100 yards with their preferred ammo. But I too have struggled to get moa with the CZ-USA 22 mags.

The variances in the bores just do not work well with the 22 wmr rounds I use.  With a chrono you can see differences.  The CZ?s will have higher average velocities, but much, much higher deviation/spread.  I ran patches with polishing compound down the bore of one of my 455?s, and that helped some, but still not grouping as tight  as my Hk or Brno.

When I need more distance & punch for rimfire, I reach for the Hk with VMax or tnt green.

What have you been able to squeeze out of your rimfire setup? I've never been a great shooter, but I have always been decent. I did a little work with my trigger, torqued action to 25 inch pounds and playing with ammo options and got sub MOA @ 100 yards this past week. First time I've ever done it with .22 LR. There was a slight breeze but still pulled it off. At 50 yards same setup gets me ragged holes if I do my part.

Nice shooting!  I'm going to have to get my 455 Trainer out of the safe and start enjoying it and trying some different ammo types.

I need to hit the range this weekend. Been wanting to get some trigger-therapy.

Two years ago I shot 5 different types of ammo thru my 455 at 50 yards.

Federal Ultra Match was best, getting .5 to .75" five shot groups.
Federal HV Match: 1"
Eley Match was a little inconsistent, one group was under .5", the next was 1"
CCI mini mag: .75 - 1.25"
CCI Copper: 2"+

I'll post next week my results from the weekend. Think I have a few additional ammo choices in my closet to try out.

That is some laser shots with the .17 HMR. I have always wanted to try one out, but the cost and availability of .22 has so far prevented me from getting one.  I feel that if I was to pick up another longer range rimfire it will likely be in .22 mag.
.22mag and .17hmr are comparable in price but not in accuracy performance.

I have both and my .22mag I struggle not to sell.

The .17hmr is just a laser and has just enough different type of round that it’s just better 98% of the time.

I personally would get the .17 first

I'm just restarting on rimfire after a very long hiatus but I'll throw my in.  This group was done while ammo testing on a new 457 American in .22 WMR. While testing I stick to 15-20 shot groups @ 50 yards, but after doing that I found the CCI 30 gr. Polytip ammo to be really compatible with the rifle. So, I also shot a 5 shot group at 50 yards to compare it with most other shooters posts. I did post this group on my testing thread in this forum recently..

Best,

JAS
